Most custom makers would build a piccolo bass, which is a bass comprised of four strings tuned an octave above normal bass pitches.  Alembic has made them -- they'll make just about anything.  Rob Allen would make one, any independent luthier would build one.  It just takes imagination and money.

Or tuned ADGC(sometimes also referred to as tenor bass) or DGCF.  Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten use the lower tunings, just to name two.

ADGC is tenor tuning (at least from my understanding) -- the top four strings of a 6 string bass (or a high C 5 string).  Piccolo pitches are an octave higher than that, just like a piccolo is higher in pitch than a flute is.

I knew Elrick basses offer a Piccolo model, do any other brand offer it?, i dont want to spend 4 thousand.

Also i remember Patitucci reord a piece with a 6 string Piccolo bass (One more angel album), so where could i get strings for that?, or they are gtr strings on a short scale bass ?

 Thanks to everyone

Ron Carter's Piccolo is a half sized upright tuned ADGC... just another thought.

6 string piccolo is pretty easy if you're down with short scale... old fender Bass VI strings (a few folks make'm). if you're not looking specifically for short scale, d'addario makes a piccolo set for 34 scale. as for where to get a piccolo on the cheap (and i don't mean crap cheap but under 3000$) there are alot of small garage builders that could probably hook you up. Garz 4 string customs start at 1550$, and you could always get an ugly ol'Wish bass.

I turned my SD Curlee into a Picc. I took a set of Conklin Snakeskin 7's, and used the D-G-F-C.
