There is a petition going around for the Post Office to issue a Jerry stamp.  It requires that the person be dead for at least 10 years.  It's still hard to believe that the 10th anniversary of Jerry going to the great fourth set in the sky passed two weeks ago.  I signed as #8053.  You can also leave a little message.  Mine was Might as well, might as well.  Here's the link:

9214 for me. Looks like this petition is growing pretty fast!
Of course when the stamp comes out, one of you US residents will have to send me some 'real' mail or I'll never see it;-)

Bill,

That's really cool! Thanks for the heads-up...I'm signature #9327.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hopefully, some more Alembicians, Deadheads or otherwise, will sign-up as well.

9704.  How many signatures are needed for a stamp?

Not a Jerry fan, but what the heck.

9936.  Now over 10,500.  I posted the link on several other boards where people will want to sign, too.

I just read the petition.  While I do respect the good intentions of the person who wrote the petition, it does seem to me that, given the apparent importance of the subject matter of the petition, that the writer might have taken a minute to proof read it before publishing it.  I do admit that I make errors in my posts all the time, but petitioning the government seems a little more formal than posting to a discussion group.  It also might help to address the petition to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, which is the committee that evaluates such petitions.  It also might help to describe who Jerry Garcia was, and why, when the committee receives thousands of such requests every year but can only select maybe twenty five, that this particular person should be one of the few selected for commemoration.  Perhaps basketball broadcaster Digger Phelps and actor Karl Malden and the other members of the committee are big Deadheads and don't need an explanation of the importance of Jerry Garcia's role in American culture; but judging from their past selections of commemorative stamps I'm guessing that's probably not the case.

I do think there is a good chance I'm wrong about this.  It could be that just the number of signatures will be all the committee needs to set the petition aside for consideration.  I have no idea, this is a subject I know nothing about.  A Garcia stamp would be nice.  The current selection of stamps leaves a lot to be desired.

For more information about the selection process, go here.
