ok i thought i would ask some questions that i have been pondering

1 what is a collet when talking about adjusting a pot on an alembic i have a 97 epic i am sure this will be answered simply but i am not sure what it is and need to tighten my treble knob

2 from reading these pages i learned that i can adjust something inside the cavity of my bass 97 epic so i looked and there is a small plastic circle that can be adjusted what will this do if i turn it

any answers would be gratly appreciated

Hi Andrew,

There's a top lid on each knob that you can gently remove with your fingertips or nails. After you've opened the top lid, the main part of the knob remains attached to the shaft of the pot by means of the collet. Once you're in, it should be obvious how to tighten or loosen the collet.

The small plastic adjustable circle sets the overal signal gain (also discussed yesterday at http://club.alembic.com/Images/394/8740.html?1079347707). If you have to set the pre-amp gain on your amp either very high or very low, you can adjust this pot to make the gain more appropriate for your amp. Just make sure you don't increase the gain to where you start overdriving your pre-amp, unless that's the sound you're after.

You can change the gain, but I'm pretty sure the standard setting will be okay for most amps.

your answers helped and i dont mean to look dumb but i am still slightly confused about this collet thing i dont have my bass with me as i am at college but i looked at it last night and if you do not mind could you describe what it looks like

is it simply the screw at the botom of the cylinder with a slot cut out of it or is it the cylinder itself i am to turn using a screw driver that fits the slot

i would really appreciate any help your info adriaan on pot is very useful i suspected this and may give it a go as i play through a trace elliot head and have to put the gain up very high and was not sure if this was normal or not as jazzmine my epic is not only my first alembic but my first active bass and as you have already seen i am very easily confused LoL

you can really adjust everything on these basses i love them

Andrew, I think you need to take the screwdriver to the cylinder. See this:

The screw at the bottom of the cylinder is probably the pot shaft itself.

The gain adjust pot will probably cure the Trace Elliot gain issue. Though, does the head have one input jack or two? Usually newer heads have one input (high sensitivity) for passive basses and one (low senstivity) one for active basses.

Make sure you have a fresh battery in there, too!

yeah it does have two inputs but they are clearly labeled so no mistake there

and i checked the battery so thats ffine

So did you have to loosen the outer cylinder with the blade screwdriver, as you thought? That's the collet?

yeah that is right thanks

as my treble knob had become loose and needed tightening i went home and did loosened the collet cylinder with a blade screwdriver and tightened it up thanks for the advice
