I am relatively new to the club and see the stocking reference pop up every once in awhile. Could someone tell me the origin/significance. I'm admittedly quite intrigued.

About the same caliber as what is a 'Paul'?
Long time ago hidden in the darker pages at the beginning of this joyfull club there once was a fierce knight of the low frequencies longing for a new weapon ...the ultimate bass.
Alas-alas-alas ...it would only be a dream because that ultimate bass was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-ar to expensive for him (a characteristic commonly encountered by drooling around these threads). Taken by despair he took an awfull decision and went out to gert the money where it is: at the bank . He decided to lend one of his wifes nylon stockings and pull over his head to stay unkown. So it IS statistically proven that most Alembics are sold in places with the highest rate of bankrobbery. And in that same place there is also a high sale of nylon stockings.

You buy that???

Nei-ei-eih ...thought so.
I invented it simply for saying that if I would have to nuy that bass I need to rob a bank, and for doing so ...you need ...right!!!!
It became Alembic slang for saying: I would love to buy it but I don't have the money

Paul the bad one

PS: DON'T believe Paul the good one when he says it is the best strap on your bass. He's the one who uses his head as an amplifier. Can you imagine the ideas coming out of it ...and NO it is not for sale or for rent.

I needed a good chortle at work today. And while the first story may have been somewhat lacking in truth, the emotional narrative would, no doubt, have made a wonderful movie! Much appreciated. Although I am new to these pages, I feel quite comfortable in saying...thank you brother Paul.

I guess I came back at the right time. The stocking that Paul TBO talks so romanticly about is really his disguise for obtaining free stuff, or so he wants you to believe. I think it is really his way of feeling, oh how do I say this, happy. I think Uncle Freud would say he is getting in touch. I would rather say that maybe he really wants to play on stage with the stocking on, but he would be disappointed to find that Devo did it first...

We just passed an April Fool's Day, and somewhere I saw a list of classic jokes, including one right around the time color television was coming out.

Apparently there was this commercial (possibly even in the Netherlands?) that told viewers they could convert their black and white TVs to color, simply by stretching a silk stocking over the picture tube.

So maybe Paul TBO just likes they way it looks, from the inside looking out?

Hey Brother Bob: there is another reason for that stocking and one you should know of as an decent photographer!
David Hamilton -the english/french photographer with the nice-nude-thin-girls- used it over his lens to obtian that special pastel look in his pictures.

Okay, not a likely Alembic product but how about nylon fitted and stretched into a pair of sunglasses. That way Paul could enjoy beautiful views and not wind up trying to eat and drink thru nylon like Woody Allen (Take the Money and Run? ... Sleeper?)

Unrelated (and probably obscure), but struck my fancy: How about the scenes in Take the Money (I think) where, during the Woody character's childhood, he plays cello in a marching band?

Oh yeah, I remember that scene..I love that movie...he kept trying to set the stand down to read music, and the band kept marching on...a classic. The escape from prison with the soap-made fake gun in the rain was priceless.

Bob, you're right about the colour TV prank: it was in the Netherlands, late 1960s I think. It is kind of a tradition to make an announcement on a nationwide news or current affairs program for a fake event next Thursday or whichever day of the week April 1 falls on, and see how many victims turn up. But the quality of those early pranks is astonishing.
