Effects for a fretless?
« on: December 06, 2005, 10:24:24 AM »
I just bought a six string fretless (TRB-6P) and was wondering what effects boxes might go well with it to help get that nice fretless soulful tone?

Thanks

Weird ...as far as my info goes they didn't made that one as a fretless. So I guess it is a home job???

Wow, you know your gear. I bought it used from 'Cecilia, the band' out of NY and the previous owner had it turned into a fretless. It sound fantastic! What kind of chorus?

***sigh***
OK ...some parts of the design I don't like but ...oh well ...this IS the type I fancy.
It is the TRB-6P of the first generation. We now have the TRB-6PII:

The bass you play -the I- was highly recommended to me for their PU's. The II PU's are not that good. As you can see they have individual tailpieces and a 3B EQ now.

Chorus?
I am no effect specialist. I use a Lexicon multi-effect rack-mountable device in which there are different types of chorus. I know there exist small foot switches (BOSS??? IBANEZ??? DOD???) which are good.
Congrats on the rare catch!

Dave,
I can highly recommend the TC Electronic SCF Stereo Chorus/Pitch Modulator/Flanger.
Not a digital effect unit of the 21th century but a great pedal.
You can read reviwes about at:

You know guys, one of the best sounding fretless Basses that I've ever played with no effects is my Vermillion Essence 5 with Rogue electronics.  It wears a set of D'Addario Chromes.  There's just something about it that has that extra growl and Mwah that nothing else I've played has.  If I must recommend an effect, the chorus is a must.  I'm also addicted to the envelope filter.  The EBS Bass IQ is the best.

Here's my Essence.  A truly phenomenal Bass.

It's a great bass. It balences so well that you don't notice it weighs 11 pounds. The piezos add some acoustic warmth to it if you dial them in. I also think the electronics may be better than the later ones. Some of the early ones had a single truss rod if I remember right, which may not be good. I also own an Elan six string fretted, but I have reached the point that I am nervous gigging with it.

I used to have a Yamaha RBX 5 and RBX 765 A, not fretless but they were nice, and I like the TRB 6 and Patitucci models............

for fretless I use a Pedulla Pentabuzz, Fodera Monarch Elite 6, Modulus Prototype 7, Zeta Crossover EUB and a Guild Ashbory.

I've heard good things about  TC Electronic Chorus mentioned in Harald's previous post.

I use an ART SGX Nitro or a Lexicon MPX G2 (rackmounts) for my FX and  for  pedals a Digitech Bass Whammy ( all 3 have real nice Chorus) a Dunlop 105Q wah, also sometimes an ART Nightbass SE and a Digitech Bass Harmony Machine.

I dont play fretless, but I do think an envelope filter would sound way cool on one.  I use a Q-Tron plus on my series I.  I switch it on when I use the bridge pickup only, and it sounds way cool and way funky...
