Worsening G.A.S.
« on: May 25, 2004, 05:54:48 PM »
Just checking to see if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon. It seems that the closer the completion date for my Alembic guitar gets, the stronger my desire to purchase another guitar becomes- not an Alembic - but, rather, something from Guitar Center or Sam Ash...something I can cash and carry the same day. I've been able to keep my desire at bay, somewhat, buying little items like effects pedals and so on (so far almost a half dozen in the last week). The only thing that kept me from coming home with a 10 top PRS today was my wife telling me not to be insane. She reminded me that my dream guitar will be here in a couple of months. But, still, I don't know for how much longer I can suppress the urge.

Slowly weakening,

Jonathan

Chill dude....... Dont you know how lucky you are?!? At least you have a second hand Alembic to get you through the wait.... Just think how tasty that hippy sandwich would be to some starving Ethiopian.

Apply your GAS to your rig.  Maybe yo uneed a new amp or want to try a different effects processor?  Maybe upgrade your cables before you get the best guitar.

I can relate, just p[icked up a Fender Esquire Custom Celtic cause it looked cool and I'm waiting a a custom Excel 5. Also picked up a 3rd F1X a couple of weeks ago. Also an Incase bag and a bunch of anime' dvd's etc. I always wanted an Ibanez Iceman and GC has a cool black one. Hey 15 months no interest! Hope the bass comes soon to put a stop to the madness!

My new bass is due within weeks and, let's see:  I've bought a 5 string LightWave, have bid agressively on several Jack Casady Signature Epiphones and a Guild Starfire (just missed it, too!) and have stalked several Jetstar II's and one or two Hofners.  Finally, I've lately been buying and turning over mid-price Ibanez and Washburns.  At least I think I've made a few bucks (rather than spending them) and have gotten to play a few models In which I've had an interest in the past.  This is not to mention having invested in an entirely new rig (top to bottom) which I'll tweak more after the new bass is in.  What do I need all this for?  I think it's the need to get something very big and important (which I will).  I have also realized that I won't believe the new Alembic is really mine till it's here.

A half dozen new pedals in a week?  That tickles me to no end!  Rock on.  We all cope differently.  Now, does anyone know someone who needs a Washburn Force 4?  Really nice, neck-thru, bubinga...

GAS definatley grabs hold and doesn't let go.  I don't even play out and can't turn up my practice amp all the way.  Yet still I'm looking at full stacks.  Something keeps telling me I need one.

Sam:  I'm beginning to think what we are talking about is evidence of long-forgotten, instinctive drives (probably common to male humans).  Like the urge to band together and chase a wooly mammoth off a cliff so the whole tribe can eat for the season...

Sam, funny you should mention the amp thing. I play at home...that's about it. I have a Marshall half-stack and have never taken it past 1!!!! It just looks so darn cool!

Bill, I may use that laundry list of yours to convince my wife that one little PRS won't hurt anybody. Nice to know this is a common ailment.

I know just what you mean Jonathan.  I've been eyeing a GK stack with a 700RB head with 2x10 & 1x15 cabinets that I have no more need for than I do a snow blower.  But boy could I chase some wooly mammoths with it!
Bill, you hit it on the head.  It's some innate drive we have.

Does that mean that I can justify the purchase of another Alembic bass that I don't need because I'm genetically predisposed to the hunt & chase mode?

Wow! I like this.

What's your specialization? I think we all (in the club) might be suffering from mass illusion / hysteria.

No, no Mrs. Smith. Don't worry about your hubby's delusions. Just bring all that unnecessary equipment to my office in Chicago and pile it beside the door. I'll take care of it.

That being said, I'm trying to buy a house, help my grown kids, and justify buying a 6th bass rig (I'm about sold on Acme, Crown or QSC, and F-1X.

As vices go, I've had some success explaining to my wife that G.A.S. is safer than motorcyles and cheaper than either sports cars or other women.

Hey Bill:

I noticed a black Guild Starfire in the Beaverton, OR Guitar Center over the weekend. Didn't play it, or anything, it looked reasonably nice. They are asking $1399.00 for it. Thought I'd pass it on. Here's a link: http://www.guitarcenter.com/locations/store.cfm?store=244

Thanks Reid:  I like the black.  Seems not everyone does.  I think the Starfire will wait till another time, though.  The one I mentioned earlier was a '97 reissue that wound up going for about $710 on Ebay (Actually still a nice deal...).

Thanks
Bill
