Question on Equipment Insurance
« on: July 29, 2004, 12:58:19 PM »
I considered this many years ago and never went forward with it.  I'm curious what other musicians in the forum are doing about insuring not just their guitars, but amps, cabinets and other gear.

I was told by my homeowner carrier that they would have to write a rider for each peice and the cost was rediculous.  Any thoughts and/or suggestions?

Regards,
-Chris

Sounds like what I discovered a few years ago.  Each piece of my gear is covered by an individuall rider.  I supply a written estimate of the replacement cost, along with the serial number and a photo(s) and they charge me 15% of the replacement cost.  The coverage includes vandilism, theft, fire, flood, acts of G_D, even mysterious loss.

Expensive, YES!!!!
Worth it, YES!!!! (for me)

Ask your agent about a commercial inland marine policy.

There are some other suggestions here, with a link to another thread with more info.

Since not all of us are professionals (musically speaking), it's worth repeating that a lot depends on whether you get paid to play. I don't, and my Allstate replacement-cost homeowner's policy has no limit on musical instruments. I really grilled them on this, and I'm fully covered even if it gets stolen or demolished while in my car, with no need to supply serial numbers, photos, or prices in advance.

Oddly, the same applies to my stereo (worth more than my car), yet I did have to get itemized coverage for a bunch of photography equipment... go figure, but don't hesitate to ask careful questions, you never know.

A few months ago, when I was in the process of getting new auto insurance, I asked for a quote on renters' insurance that included the full replacement value of my little family of four instruments (which has since shrunk to two) including my rare Series II. The dollar figure was about $150 US per year.
