Anyone tried Tone Tubby Hemp Cone Speakers?
« on: August 22, 2004, 02:54:54 PM »
I've been hearing and reading about the Tone Tubby Hemp Cone speakers that Clapton and Santana, etc. are apparently using.  These days I am playing an '83 Electrum, (acquired about 3 weeks ago - my feet haven't touched the ground since I got it), through a boogie mark III combo and a theile extension cabinet.  Do any of you alembic guitar players, (yes, I heard rumors there are others besides me) have any experience with these speakers in a similar set-up?  In a dissimilar set-up?  Your thoughts and observations would be greatly appreciated.  Also, any suggestions on how to explain to my wife that my obsessing over this guitar is, in this case, entirely appropriate?

Hush-hush Bill
Hush.
Alembic guitar players are VERY shy beings. You can see them hopping around in the early morning through low-frequency land. They feel better here than in the outside Yamenderibson-land.
So I am sure when you ask it quitly they will come ...releuctantly and ready to jump away by the first rough move ...but in the end ...they'll talk and give you some advice.

Paul TBO

BTW: welcome in the club!!!
And don't be afraid I am th ebiggest nutcase ...the others talk more normal

Tone Tubby Hemp Cone?
I had a friend once who was afraid to ask for a Cry Baby Wah Wah in the music store because he thought I was kidding him.  Sorry Bill I never heard of them but the rumors are true. There are lots of guitar players around here.
Like Paul says, welcome and you know you gotta post pictures.  As for the obsessing, just have her ask one of us.  We'll back you up.

Hi Bill:  I'm not a guitarist, but I have heard the Tone Tubby name - probably through my son (a guitarist).  I'll see what he or his friends may know.

Welcome to the Club.  Don't be shy.  There actually are guitar players around.  I don't know why, but the guitarists in this Club seem to get along with the bass players better than other guitarists I know...

Congratulations on your acquisition.  Play it in good health.  I'm glad it sounds like it's working pretty well for you.  You may as well post some pictures of it sooner than later - people around here will not let up on you till you do!

Bill - If you are to be a regular, I'll designate myself Bill TBO (The bass one).  You must understand - I tried to come up with a really clever name convention that would distinguish between us, but I struck out at we are both attorneys and it appears we may less than a year apart in age (I am 50.  You are a youthful 49. So, older or younger was at risk.).    Assuming you take to this place (as I have), it's handy and fun (in a lame, but collegial way).

Perhaps Paul (You know which one) would not mind helping me out with an explanation of what TBO means as it follows his name.  If you would do this, it may save me from appearing to have babbled incoherantly to our new friend!

About the speakers, they are made by A Brown Soun in San Rafael, CA.  Here is the URL to their site: http://www.tonetubby.com

I'm leaving for 5 days in Yosemite with the family tommorrow, but when I return I will attempt to put up some pix of my beeeeuuutiful birds-eye maple faced axe.  Though I consider myself fairly proficient in State of the Art low tech, I am somewhat of a luddite when it comes to e-mail and sending pix.  I have a 4 megapixel digital camera.  I seem to remember something about this may be too much info to send over the net.  Should I set the camera for less megapixels (I'm pretty sure there is something in the manual about how to do so)?  Any suggestions on how to properly take and send pix would be very helpful.

I expect I may become a regular here if all you guys are even half as friendly as Susan & family were when I dropped by unannounced at the shop last week.  As Bill TBO aka Bassman10096 noted above, I am an attorney.  I had a court appearance in Santa Rosa  about 4 minutes from Alembic and brought in my guitar to get a case that fitted better than the one I bought it with.  I wound up staying almost 3 hours, got a personal tour from Susan, played a bunch of incredible instruments, and just had a great old time.  I strongly urge anyone who has any interest in Alembic to take the time to visit if they are in the Bay Area.  (Luckily I live here).  I expect to go back soon and take my wife to show her how beautiful the Further is.  I have until next April to convince her to allow me to get one for myself for my upcoming 50th.  (Did I really just type that!)  She still wonders why on earth I would need another guitar.  Some women just don't understand.

Hi Bill, welcome to the club. I was a guitar player until I had a rendez-vous with an Alembic bass. Since then I haven't looked back (sold all my guitars) and became a low-ender. I guess you've chosen a safer path with the purchase of an Alembic guitar!

If you have picture editing software on your computer (like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or even MS Picture Editor) you shouldn't bother to set your camera to a lower quality setting. Just enjoy and make some fabulous pictures for home use and printing! For posting purposes on this board you should digitally trim them down to 800 x 600 or 640 x 480, and tweak the quality settings until those (preferably) JPG's are

Welcome Bill,

Lets see?..  Approaches to Senior Management?

Alembic guitars allow my playing to achieve levels I had long ago considered unreachable.

Just listen to how good this sounds honey?.

I couldn?t have imagined how much better a guitarist my Alembic has made me?..  Don?t you think honey?

Listen to this??.

Imagine what a Further would do for my playing??

I know I?m an addict, but it?s way healthier than cocaine?.. And look what we have to show for the money.  And no postnasal drip!  LOL!

Can you believe how good this thing sounds!

I admit that I go for the finest things in life?.  That?s why I picked you??..

Too much?  Maybe! But all true!

Again, welcome to the club!  I play through Mesa stuff myself?  The hemp speakers look very interesting...  I knew that if someone did enough ?testing?  they?d come up with a speaker that was as high as the audience. LOL!

Enjoy your new obsession.   You?re in good company.

Bill,

Like my brother, Hollis, I welcome you and your guitar to the club. Yes, our instruments may be quite a bit smaller than the majority of those who rumble in these parts, but they sound just as sweet. So, on behalf of the shorter scaled ones, I offer this verse from one of the most famous movies of all time...

We'd like to welcome you to Munchkin Land!!!

As for senior management and the seemingly unsatiable desire for that next Alembic, it's a lot like skiing. Just zip up, keep your head forward and pray you make it to the end of the run in one piece!!! And, if that fails, may I suggest some expensive jewelry.

Regards,

Jonathan

Bill TBO: Palembic AKA Paul TBO = Paul The Bad One. There is a Paul TGO (i.e., the Good One), but I can't for the life of me remember his club screen name.

Bill: Welcome to the club. Some of us are REALLY screwed up on this club site....we play guitar AND have been called to the dark side and play bass as well. I figure why screw-up on just one instrument, when you can be truly bad (a la Leonard Pinth-Garnell) on TWO instruments, LOL! My new Custom Alembic bass just arrived after a considerable gestation period (and considerable dosh outlay, LOL!) and I'm already foaming at the mouth trying to decide what shape my new Custom Alembic GUITAR order will take. All it'll take is that magic Homerun 20%-off Special O' Month and DING!, stick a knife in this turkey, I'm done! LOL!

BTW, I'm divorced and happily single, so WAF (i.e., Wife Acceptance Factor) is not an issue for me (Sorry). I do know what you are up against, though, and you have my sympathy, LOL!

Jonathan: How's the new Custom going? Any news that's fit to print? I'm living vicariously through all you expectant fathers now that my baby has been delivered and I haven't yet decided on my Custom guitar specs nor have I placed the order for such. Ah, the delicious agony of the wait, LOL!

Kevin,

As I understand, she's pretty much done. I think we're just tying up a few loose ends and working on a flight case. If all of the stars and planets align, it might ship at the end of this week. If not...shortly there after.

Brother Kevin,

it's an old running gag going back in time to the dark ages of this club.
That time you got Paul the bad one (Palembic), Paul the good one (elzie), Paul the fake one (Dino), Paul the ugly one ( oh ...huh ...we never found one), Paul the John one ...

Ah lalalalaaa...those were the days ...alll the Pauls gathering round the table when a new club member arrives and start yelling for PICTURES banging with beerbottles on the table. It was really good! Especially if we found the beat in Brother Paul the fake one's odd-meter trickery!!!! LOL

Speaking of old days, there was a time when every thread here ended up with a discussion about the merits of various beers.  What happened?  Are we growing up?  Naawww that can't be it.

Bill thanks for the tone tubby link. That's a good site with some interesting links. The amount of gear out there to choose from is staggering.

Enjoy your vacation.

Maybe you should change your name to P. O'Lembic.
