Is Bigger Better?

Or am I just compensating for something?  I found a huge speaker at Cannon Online in Australia a couple of months ago.  21 with a six-inch voice coil and 8.7 kilograms of magnet.  Net weight is 67 pounds.  Speaker freaks unite!!!  Last week I e-mailed US Speakers and asked why they did not sell these P. Audio 21s from Bangkok, Thailand.  Low and behold:

Wow!  I know the arguments for 10s and 12s, but if you have the back and a truck for hauling them,  don't these look great?  Earlier this year (last December and January) I bought eight 10 JBLs and four 2 JBL drivers & lenses and have been looking for suitable 18s or 21s to make myself a new rig.  I believe my search is over.
 
Has anyone used any P. Audio SD Series speakers?  If so, I would like to read what you think of them.  If anyone is using the 21 Beyma's in AccuGroove's El Whappo Grande cabs, I would be very interested in reading opinions on those, also.  Note that the Beyma 21L50s go down to 20 Hz.  You could really make people nauseous with those indoors!

Well, with eight 10"s and four horns,   I can make four of these: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Or, I can make two of these: . . . . . . . . . .        Or, I can make one of these:  

   

   

    I planned on making four 2x10 boxes with a 2" horn and 4.5KHz X-over in each, and then I can run one sub and one or two mid/high boxes biamped, or I can run two subs and four 2x10 boxes for mids and highs (stereo biamped).  The JBLs are all fairly efficient speakers, so I figured four 10"s for every one 21" and two 2" horns, as blowing diaphragms used to cost $175 a shot, until I found Cannon Online (Bless them!), who sells em for $70 a piece.  BTW:  Their replacement diaphragms sound as good as the originals titaniums do.  Pretty cool.    I already have lots of boxes to make any configuration I want for any size venue, except Eden type 10's and horns in the same box with short-throw lenses and ultra high-output 21"s.  Since I live in northern Maine, we don't have any music stores that carry the neat stuff to try out.  You Internet stuff in and build it yourself.  We's all a-koo-stick-al gene-e-us' up here in the Great White North, ya know!  Now if we kin jest talk Elie Mae inta keepin her beavers in the cement pond til we's a done tinkering . . . .  Dang, that's the third new-fangled chained saw I bent this week.  Jed?!  Fetch me that fancy cuttin torch again, tay?  (Message edited by poor_nigel on September 16, 2004)

With lil yankee inginuity you have the makings for a nice/large system.  
The JBL's are not only efficient, they have a nice extended range, think the e-110's go to 8k hz. I also like the idea of the smaller cabinets, alot easier on the back.
The maple syrpul season is almost here..yer gonna be  busy !

Check out this 34 sub by Audiobahn (for the car stereo enthusiasts).  She handles 5000 Watts RMS.  Certainly not practical to lug around anywere though.

Hey Gary, actually the 10's are JBL 2012H speakers.  They are a bit beefier than the E-110s and only go up to 5KHz.  Since I am crossing over @ 4,500, I went with the higher wattage, less bright 10s.  I generally use my D-110s and 120s for sound reenforcement and crossover @ 6KHz.  Maple syrup is about $15 to $20 a gallon here, but it is pure and really good.  I thought it would be cheaper, like lobster is here - $4 to $6 a pound on sale.  
 
Mikey, thanks!  I went and checked out those Audiobahn 34s and no one has a straight picture of them.  The one in your picture is not the one they are currently selling, as the current ones use a 2 rubber suspension (foam type).  One kid said he installed two in the back of his pickup truck and they first blew out his windows (hmmm . . .) and then blew out his tires.  OK, I believing that big time.  I can see how the little boy in the picture is able to sit in the cone (without dad freaking out), as the cone is made of titanium.  Price on these is reported retail from $5K to 5,999.95 and are selling for $1,500 on eBay to around $3,000 at most discount sites.  If bigger is better (raw bass guitar would break down foam suspensions), then these are definitely the best I have ever seen!  Unfortunately, my back is not in these puppies' league.  I think I will have to go with a pair of the wimpy 21 speakers out there.
