Eric Johnson was in Seattle last weekend. He played solo, all acoustic (guitar and piano). I'd never seen him play anything but electric guitar before. He's a master. One of my favorites.

I'd love to hear him playing an Alembic....

I was an Eric Johhson fan back in the early seventies. He was in a band called the Electromagnets; and they came through town several times. They were great.

He's still great. It was really nice seeing him playing solo acoustic, it gave me an opportunity to watch him play without effects. It was a lot easier for to get the gist of what he was doing, and understand at least some of how he was doing it.

How does he play so well?

Incidentally, if you can ever catch Eric with Roscoe Beck on bass, DON'T miss it! Roscoe is my-tee-fine, and incidentally designed the only Fender five I'd truly like to own one day, despite my automatic distaste for bolt-neck guitars.

Of course, what's the first thing in Roscoe's signal chain? An old red-knob F2b!

Roscoe has been touring with the Dixie Chicks lately. Otherwise he's a regular here in Austin, which is a treat.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Eric four times, always in small clubs. Beck on bass for two of the shows, awsome combination.

FYI for you DFW area members. It appears you can catch the acoustic set mentioned by Hollis...EJ will be at the Bass Performance Hall with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (great music). Oct 26, unfortunately that's a Tuesday. But...another inspiring bass player: Victor Wooton.

That sure sounds like a show worth seeing. Eric Johnson is such a fine musician, and with Bela and the Flecktones.....A good time for sure.

I'm aching to go; I'd like to see what Eric does in an acoutic setting. It's a bit of a drive for me and with school age kids...hmm, I wonder if my wife would understand if I took off?

Sigh, probably not, she enjoys Eric Johnson as much as I, and Bela, too. I'm glad we share many common interests, but this is one time when I wish it weren't so.

You might find this interesting. in the earliy eighties a co-worker of mine went to a friend's wedding down in Austin. One of the grooms friends was...you guessed it. Towards the evening's end when most of the guests had left, Eric entertained the remaining few with an accoutic set. My friend found him to be warm, quiet, and very modest. Not to mention jaw-dropping talented. I like stories like that.

Now to go convince my wife that it's imperitive for the family's well being that I make this show.....

I like that story Mike. He did seem a very warm person. He was having a little trouble keeping one of his guitars in tune, when an audience member yelled out, You can play my guitar anytime, he responded, Does it stay in tune?

I can't help you with the right get outta the house words, but here's to hoping you find them.

A babysitter maybe?

Might be easier than I thought, when I told my wife when and where, she didn't flinch as she looked at her calendar and quickly announced I don't have anything going on. Not sure if she meant if I was going, too?!
