Author Topic: Anyone tried an SF-2 Superfilter with a guitar? (Read 421 times)

There is an SF-2 currently on e-bay and I was wondering if anyone has any experience using one with a guitar? (You know, those small instruments with the six skinny strings that you can play all night without getting a hernia).

that question has been asked before and if I remember well Mica says that the tone spectrum of the SF-2 is designed to the low-side. Those six skinny strings will take lot of wheight I guess.
I don't know anybody who actually messed around with it.

I layed away an SF-2 yesterday, I'll pick it up in a couple of weeks. I got it with the Persuader in mind, however, my understanding is that it will work very well with guitars as well as basses.... I'll let you know when I pick it up.

Sorry I can't help you with the one on e-bay, I'm sure it'll be long sold before I pick mine up....

To quote Alembic's SF-2 (under products/preamps):

The Super Filter has many applications. As an effector for guitar and bass, an unlimited field of both dramatic and subtle spectral effects are available. And when the direct volume control is set fully counterclockwise, the filtered signal alone directs the ear's attention to the natural-sounding filter effect, unlike an equalizer where the input signal is always supplied to the output at unity gain.

Interesting vocal effects including band limiting can be dialed in. And the opposite of the last effect can be used to extend the frequency response of closed box speaker enclosures. The Super Filter is a very useful tool.

I think that sounds like it works well with guitars too.....

It is as versitle with a guitar as with a bass. I plugged in my Strat w/ emg's and it really shimmered. I've also used it with a Paul, 7str Schecter, Mockingbird w/B Lawrence L500's and an Esquire. I was able to tweek all kinds of clean tones with all of them. I did not try it with any overdrive settings yet. I did use a digitech effects pedal and was very pleased.

By the way, anyone have suggestions on whether to put the SF-2 between guitar and amp, or in the amp's effects loop between pre and power amp? From what I surmise from Alembic's description, it can work either way.

I'm thinking I'll run it thru the effects loop of the F1-X for the Persuader and studio stuff, and I guess I'll run it thru the Mesa's effect's loop for the Skylark. Although I'm still gonna try running the Skylark through the F1-X and SF-2...

I suppose I could run the the Skylark through the SF-2 through the effects loop of the F1-X through the effects loop of the Mesa....

Help!
