ok- so i am looking into one of these...
i would appreciate some input on the sound, quality etc...
bolt neck vs neck through etc
you guys know what to say

I've got a status with a bolt on graphite neck. It does not sound as warm as wood, it's got a LOT of attack it sounds like throwing a brick through a glass window. It also sounds a bit more compressed (could be the bartolini's) then wood I think but I like it from time to time. Don't have any experience with Status specifically, but I do with another graphite neck wonderbass- the Zon Legacy Elite. This thing had great tone, a great neck, great lots of stuff. But,after 2 years of ownership my son traded it in on an Alembic Europa. His reason was that the Zon was a Ferrari for sure, but the Alembic was just so engaging to play. 5 years later he still says it was the right move.
Like the difference between a mere mortal stereo and an all tube rig playing vinyl through electrostatics or k-horns: one sounds good, the other makes you look forward to the next time you can play it.
Is that all the graphite? I don't know, but every instrument I've owned or played that had graphite in the neck left me subconsciously wanting.

I think they're great basses in the hands of the right player and through the correct rig. I'm still hoping to one day get a Stealth or a B2, but satisfied my cravings temporarily with an Energy Matrix 5 which I got off ebay for ?230....which is extremely cheap for a graphite-necked bass. Needs a bit of tlc, but still a bargain. They can sound very clinical (one of the reasons I eventually sold my previous 3 Statuses, which didn't agree with the rig I had at the time), but are very powerful and attacking. If you like a very percussive, aggressive tone they're tough to beat. And they're virtually bullet-proof....

I'd just like to add something to everything that's been said here - most of which I agree with, BTW.

The three Status basses I have are all one piece graphite. Yes, the attack is there - it'll cut you in half given a chance. But, you can calm them down and warm them up. To be honest, there's not much loss in warmth having graphite. I don't find the sound of them wanting compared to my wood basses - quite the opposite in fact, sometimes I find the wood ones wanting!

And as BigBadBill said - they are bulletproof.

FWIW - I play the Stealth more than anything else!

Back in '96 when I was moving towards a 5 string, Status were one of the basses on my shortlist which also included Warwick and tobias. I ended up with the Epic after alot of auditioning. Not really a comment on status' quality or playability, I just didn't like them.

I have a buzzard 1 & buzzard 2. I love them both. The b 2 is a bit warmer because of the wood body. It is my daily instrument of choice for parcticing, rehearsing & gigging...and it's bullet proof.
