but the reports were as expected- great!
the crowd was mostly grey haired and there was a particular smell of marijuana in the garden,,,

I missed the shows as well, but my friend went and he loved it. He said that Jack Bruce's voice was not what it used to be, and that he couldn't believe how good Ginger Baker's drum solo was.

Rolling Stone did a quick blurb about the shows and gave favorable reviews. If you went, it appears that the audience was awash with the cognescenti of Rock and Hip culture, LOL!

I couldn't afford the ridiculous ticket prices, so I'll continue to enjoy my RAH DVD, LOL!

Hey Sam,
It was the DVD. Here in Chicago it played on PBS (WTTW) during begging for dollars last weekend, and if you were willing to donate $190 (!!) the station would send you the 2 DVD and the 2 CD audio set as well.

Now Mike and Sam!! Part of the deal is that you are supporting public television, which is a good thing. So, in addition to the DVD's and CD's, you get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that you are helping to provide quality television programming to your community! On my TV (I only get three channels), opposite Cream was Martha Stewart and Lost. So from my perspective, supporting public television has significant intrinsic value. I received my copy of the Grateful Dead Movie by making a contribution to my public television system. I paid a lot more than the value of the DVD; but part of the value I received was that my public television system is still on the air and still providing quality programming. Now get out your checkbook and make that donation!!!

That must be why you play so well Dave. Not much to distract you from practice, TV wise.
I helped man the phone bank during a PBS drive one year. You wouldn't believe some of the nuts that call in. One guy yelled at me because he paid less than a year ago and couldn't believe his membership had expired already. Then there's the kids who call to talk to Barney.

I saw the GREAT PERFORMANCES broadcast udring our local PBS fundraiser last week. It reinforced something I realized some years ago:

Certain bands exist in a time and place both literal and personally for the players and the audience. This performance certainly reinforced this for me. They looked old. Eric certainly did not look comfortable occupying all the space he had to fill. Jack was less the matador he used to be, and Ginger seemed to be counting under his breath up in the middle of these tunes. And I gotta say, it made ME feel old watching them trying to catch lightning in a bottle when they could hardly raise static.

They CERTAINLY can still play, but divorced from the time and place where this lineup forged their legend, they would have been better served to leave the legend undisturbed. Sometimes you just can't go back.
