Suggestions for a 2x12 Guitar Cabinet?
« on: January 15, 2006, 10:15:14 AM »
I was down at the studio last night cleaning up, rearranging, and experimenting with a stereo (two amp) set up.  I have an old VERY funky homemade-type 2x12 cab that I've had at least 20 years.  I don't even remember where I got it or the last time I used it.  I've been dragging it from studio to studio for years basically because I just don't throw stuff out!  Anyway, last night I cracked it open and was quite surprised.  I expected cheapo speakers and, lo and behold, it's loaded with original JBL D120s!  So now I'm on a mission to provide these puppies with a cabinet worthy of their sound and heritage.  I remember some postings around here of some people that make really nice custom wood cabinets.  A search for speaker cabinet turns up LOTS of postings - like the needle in the haystack.  So, any suggestions for a 2x12 guitar cab would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill, tgo

Hi Bill,

If I may be so bold, quick google search of Custom Guitar Cabinet gave a plethora of interesting replys.

Check out:

www.tone-tools.com

www.electricwoodamps.com

The last one looks the the Alembic of speaker cabs with your choice of woods, not cheap.

So many others.  Happy hunting.

Bill; here is the thread wherein Kevin talks about his 2x12 cab that was built by Sultone.

Dave:

Thanks.  I think that's the one I remembered, but for the life of me couldn't remember the name.  All my brain came up with was Soldano.  Not bad for an old fart, huh?

Bill Boekhoff at Sultone is very good and the workmanship and pricing are excellent. Make sure you have plenty of time to wait however.'Nuff said.

I think Kevin's cab looks great.  Let us know if you end up doing something like that.

Thanks for the compliments, Dave.

It sounds even better than it looks. Bill's joinery is incredible...all solid hardwoods (no veneers or plywoods) and no damping materials (insulation batting) and it doesn't have rattle one!

That particular cab is loaded with Celestion greenbacks, but just as easily could accompany any 12 driver. JBL D-120's are a Boekhoff (and Garcia) favorite, and go particularly well with Fender and Fender-esque tube amps.

My custom Sultone Twin Reverb cab will be loaded with Weber VST D-120 clones, IF I ever get it that is. Been waiting over a year because I haven't made enough of a pest of myself, apparently. While my wait has been extremely frustrating and despite my having paid in full in advance, in all fairness to Bill, I understand he's had a multitude of personal problems this past year. Having said that, I do understand (VIA harmonycentral.com) that he has produced cabs in the past year, so my cab has apparently been pushed back due to my relative lack of complaining.
