SUPRISED that i have not seen any posts from new york area members..

heres my .02 worth
PHIL- please go buy an alembic...modulus is a good bass, but damn it sounds clunky?muddled? imho- its hard to put a finger on what i dont like about it- could even be his set up etc.the soundboards always sound pretty good. i shouldnt say not like - i mean dont care for. But he was absolutely evil on that thing last night- especially on the st stephen/eleven
thats my absolute only negative comment....
this grouping of barracco, osborne, sipe, shless and campbell are tight- real tight... and they felt it after the opener of direwolf-
i can rest comfortably knowing the music is in good hands...
this one is definitely worth burning and is already available at btree
my bet after listening to some of the shows- this will end up being a freebee sdbd

I went to fri and sat beacon shows...all 3 hammerstien and all three tower....
 
With the exception of the friday night beacon, all these shows are great...Its really hard to say which ones Ive enjoyed the most, but Id have to say the hammerstien shows so far are my favs...
 
Phils modulus doesnt sound very clunky or muddled to me...it actually sounds pretty dry, tight, and well defined...
 
Does he have it running through a leslie cabinet?   Or is that barracos cabinet with the rotating speaker.>I seem to remember that same cabinet being onstage at 80's dead shows

I'm pretty sure Phil uses a leslie. Last time I saw him I thought his bass sound was terrible. To be honest, I haven't liked his sound since he officialy put the Godfather away in the 80's and started playing sixers. Old School Phil totally owns. And Dead, for that matter.

It seemed to me that as the 80's progressed Phil was going for a feel it as opposed to a hear it sound.  As a guitar player, my ears are not attuned to the bass as much as others around here, but I often found my self longing for days gone by when Phil's sound was more articulated in the band.  I ran into Phil in a bathroom recently.  He wasn't aware that Alembic was still in business in Santa Rosa, and told me he had recently been speaking with Rick Turner about a new bass.

Personally, I think Phil has a nice tone with his Modulus.

davehouck. You seem to be in the know. Does the name or term Rothchild have any thing to do with the Alembic Company? I have no foundation for this just seems attached in my head. Thanks, Michael S.

IIRC Rothchild(?) were the first US distributors. Read up the Alembic history (long version) on the main site here ...

Michael; according to the history that Adriaan cited, Rothchild was the distributor for Alembic from 1976 to 1978.
