Queen Plus Paul Rodgers in Atlanta!
« on: March 08, 2006, 12:39:53 AM »
Just got back from the Queen and Paul Rodgers show. I won't give details but it was fantastic! My silence is for those whom shall see the show and want to be surprised like myself. They will probably never do this again & I'm glad I caught them when they came near me. The sound was phenominal(of course) and everybody was spot on.

Dude!

This is a total hijack, but I just checked your profile after seeing Atlanta in the subject.  The sound guy, Colin, at the Peachtree Tavern, is an very old and good friend of mine.  I'll be staying with him this weekend.  He mentioned there was a Zepplin tribute band playing this Saturday....so I'll see you there!

Yep.  Colin was the road engineer for a band I was in called Acoustic Workshop. He played drums with us for a while, too.   We used to play Island Rock in the mid-to-late '90's, and played at the Tavern when it was the Chameleon Club. I've known Colin since '92, and have been working with him musically since then. Technically, I am half-owner of the PA in the Tavern, but that's really Colin's baby.

My daughter went to see them last week in Toronto. I could not understand why she would want to go? To me Freddy WAS Queen!!! Anyway, she said it was great, so I am glad she got to have a good experience at the concert. Who was on bass? ...... OK, don't go there!

The guy on bass is Danny Miranda from Blue Oyster Cult ('90's era), he played a P-Bass through two rack mounted SVT's & two 8x10's. It sounded great, everything was just great and Paul Rodgers' voice is intact. Again, this is a great show not to be missed!

While I'm a big Paul Rodgers fan, I, too, wondered about how he would sound in place of the late Freddie Mercury.

They ran excerpts of these shows on PBS here in Nashville last week, and it IS wonderful.  PR sounded just great on this material.  Different, certainly, and he wisely steered clear of some tunes where FM had sung with lots of falsetto, etc.  It actually reminded me that FM, like a lot of singers, was good at his material, but probably wouldn't sound so hot on other material, and I certainly mean NO disrespect to Freddie's memory. But there's lots of singers in that category.  PR is one of those singers that can reach across a lot of different styles and make it work.

But to tell you the truth, what REALLY blew me away was Brian May . . . he sounds better than ever.  Must be in the same club with David Gilmour and Jeff Beck, the older they get, the hotter they burn!

Danny Miranda 'played the gig', but looked out of place visually, and geez, if I was making that kind of money, you can bet your last dollar I'd hardly be playing a PBass and SVTs!!!  Don't know why they weren't using Dave Bronze or Pino or Guy Pratt.  Tony Levin would have been PERFECT for this.  Oh well . . .

Danny was playing in the Las Vegas production of We Will Rock You & already had the connection w/ Paul Rodgers from that. So when John Deacon was not going to commit, Paul had brought up Danny to Bryan May & Roger Taylor, letting them know this guy knew all the material. As for the P-Bass, I read in an issue of Bass Player that he chose the P because that is the Queen bass tone. Pino is on tour w/John Mayer, Guy Pratt is probably on retainer to tour w/David Gilmour,i don't know who Dave Bronze is & Tony Levin-well,I don't really know.

No Freddie no John Deacon, no Queen.  Call me a purist, but it ain't right...  They can all play together, but to use that name in my opinion is wrong...

I agree to a certain extent but I really wanted to see this show & it was worth it. Besides Deacon refused to even show up for Queen's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony much less even tour. This is not like Entwistle's passing & the band carrying on w/out him. The guy just flat out refused & the other two wanted to do this. I think I'd do the same thing if I haven't played in a band situation since 1986!
