What's Your Favorite Tuning Head
« on: June 08, 2006, 07:36:22 AM »
I thought it would be interesting to find out which tuning head was everyones favorite.
I like the CROWN, small or large. The king of guitars/basses deserves it's crown.

If i can save enough for another custom, it'll have a crown peghead, just because Alembics should. Of the two I have, i prefer the orion style to the cone. No doubt PTBO would agree.

Something about hearing conehead makes me think of Dan Aykryod.

I think it really depends on the the body style. I had an Orion with a crown peg head. It was kinda funky and unusual for an Alembic. If it ever happens again, I think the in-line choices are better suited. Maybe a reversed in-line Elan peg head. My Anniverasry naturally has the crown, but I'd be really thrilled if it were topped with the fan peg head, it's too cool.

What I like about Alembic is that you could do just about anything, even design your own as some have done.

The crown is classic ALEMBIC to me.  I just LOVE the fan or knob as an alternate.  I like the Elan shape better for inline layouts.  The Omega cutout crown is maybe a little too much of a good thing for me.

I REALLY don't like the cone pegheads!

I happen to have two types of cones. There was the early flat-sided Spoiler/Persuader/Exploiter shape, then there was the modern triangular shape (on the left).

In between, there was this one on the right - you don't see many of these around!

In my mind, the crown head is definitely the classiest look I have seen.

I like the cone heads ok too (that slender cone pictured above is kind of nice), but still, the crown is the classic look.

I love the Crown head, also I also like the Orion and the Europa head. I'd like to see those two done as a 3 + 2 on 5 string just to make it a bit smaller. I think they'd look cool.

I think the traditional Alembics like the SC, MK an Series basses look much better with the Crown heads.

Alembic Guitars I've seen pictures of with the crown head seem to be a bit top heavy looking as if the crown is a little oversized for the guitar.

The pointy triangular shapes don't move me at all. But that wouldn't stop me buying a bass with one.

The one on the Dragons wing is ace....!!

I recall Alembic Distillate 8-strings in the Exploiter body had a variation on the cone that has complex radii.  Kind of cool, but not my cup of tea.  To me, the crown is ultra-cool for 4 and 5 stringers, and the knobby for 8, 10 and 12 stringers.  The peghead on the Alembird worked really well for that body style, but otherwise not really my thing either.  So... Crown and Knobby for me!

Crown is king for me, but ths one is growing on me more and more as I stare at it.  I agree that body shape help dictates the appropriate type.

While I respect the fact that Alembic makes custom basses and you can pretty much (and rightfuly so) get what you want, I agree that body shape does determine which head stock looks good to me. It's like you can tell a Strat from a Tele without even seeing the body just the tuning head.

Thanks Jacko that looks really good, I really like that style.
I think that would even look good on a guitar in a 4 + 2  or 3 +3 configuration as well.
