Anybody Wanna Go To the Phil & Friends Show This Sat?
« on: June 29, 2006, 06:53:44 AM »
The girlfriend is in Athens GA for the AMA/H-D Women In Motorcycling Conference as a demo rider for American Honda so I have a spare ticket to PLAF with Trey Anastasio/Mike Gordon/et al on Sat., 7/1 @ 4:30pm at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ. I'm gonna blast down the shore for a World Famous Max's Hot Dog and then run up the GSP to the show. Anybody want the ticket? If not, I'm gonna stretch across both seats and enjoy the show.

Cheers,

Kevin

I'd love to go Kevin. Unfortunately I have a gig of my own in perth, Scotland so I'll not be able to make it. Hope it's a good one.

Gas, grass or *ss: nobody rides for free! LOL!

Seriously, if you're a guy you have a zero-to-none chance of ever swinging a leg over my pillion seat. My definition of broke-back is riding more than 600mi per day on any two-wheeler, LOL!

Now back to the subject:

The ticket is still available...any NJ-area Dead Heads out there?

Kevin,

Thanks for the offer. I would have taken you up on the offer, but I have a party to go to on Saturday. Would have been a nice ride down to Max's for the pre-show dogs, even though I hate riding my Harley on the Parkway. I hope you have a great show.

Regards,
Pete

Pete: I usually take back roads, but the jaunt from Rt. 36 in Eatontown and the PNC is only a few exits north on the GSP. With the bike, I can roll in as late as I want and avoid all the traffic and still park right up front at the gates ahead of those who paid $25 extra for preferred parking!

Joe: About 200mi.

All: Tix are in Section 101, Row J, seats 14 & 16

Re:  riding on the back of a motorcycle.  This afternoon I was driving down Market Street in S.F.  In front of me was a guy on a motorcycle with a T-shirt that said the following across the back:

If you can read this, the BITCH fell off

I almost drove up on the sidewalk laughing.

Although my favorite bumper sticker lately:

On the way to work, behind a huge, muddy 4x4.  One clean spot on the back bumper, this sticker:
Lost your cat?  Look under HERE

Kevin,

How about a review of the show if you get a chance. I hope you had a good time. You really ended up with some great weather for the ride.

Pete

It was hot and muggy, but not a bad ride. They had a wedding going on so I couldn't park in my usual spot. Despite moronic parking lot attendants, I switched to the other side and parked right next to the VIP gate. There were no bikes there prior and the $30 extra VIP lot was half empty!

I was at extreme stage right in the first section so I was maybe 10 rows from the stage. That's the closest I've ever been to any members of the Dead in almost 30yrs. of trying! The Of the Moment PLAF line-up is/was:

Phil- Bass/Vocals
Barry Sless-Pedal Steel
Larry Campbell-Guitar/Vocals
Rob Barraco-Keys/Vocals
Joan Osborne-Vocals
?-Sax
John Molo-Drums

The sound was by UltraSound and was decent. It was that computer controlled modular jammy (what's it called Joey?), even though I was right on top of the stage-right array.

The place was packed. I got there late hoping to miss the Phish guys (Trey Anasatasio & Mike Gordon) and the Benevento/Russo duo. I think they opened and closed the show...I didn't stick around and it made leaving unmolested a reality and a pleasure. Trey played on the last PLAF number and the encore (GDTRFB). The show wasn't as good as past shows I've downloaded off of the LAMA site, nor was it as good as last fall's Jersey show (11/22/05 @ the NJPAC), but it was decent. I was dissappointed that Larry and Barry didn't play musical musical instruments...Barry stuck with the steel, and Larry only played guitar. Last time, they both traded guitar and steel licks, and Larry played mandolin and fiddle. Joan sang most of the songs, with Phil second and Rob singing lead on a couple. All in all, not a remarkable show, but it was decent.

Larry is playing more like Barry (think Jerry) these days, and Barry was (as is usual) sublime on the pedal steel...when he took a solo...otherwise he was buried in the mix.

FWIW, Phil is looking very frail these days. I know he's had a liver transplant, and is well into his 60's, but he's even more gaunt than usual. He was in great spirts though. Maybe it was just my good seats...I saw what he REALYY looks like up-close, LOL!

Lots of young-ins at this show. More kids than old farts like me, and lots brought the whole family! My, my, how times have changed!
