Cool picture!
I've seen this one at EvH's Bass connection (i'm sure you checked it out)
Alembic Piccolo Junior Mini Scale from 1989 (not for sale)
Would be a very nice first bass for him.
Maybe you can build him a piccolo vanderkley rig (some 8 x 2 cabs)

Start them young, and they won't be afraid of them when they grow up. Just be sure and keep him humble, don't let him laugh at his friends who aren't as fortunate, posed in front of Fenders in THEIR baby pictures.
