Today is, or would have been Woodrow Wilson Woody Guthrie's birthday, born July 14, 1912 in Okemah, Okla., and died Oct. 3, 1967. Folk singer/songwriter who penned, This Land is Your Land. Folk hero, pioneer, legend

I'm betting a lot of Woody's Great Depression era songs would sound pretty topical if worked up and performed in our current generation.

Two nights ago I watched a documentary on Woody on the PBS series American Masters; it was very good and highly recommended. Check your local listings.

Right after that was an episode of Great Performances which was Bruce Springsteen and his Seeger Sessions band live somewhere in the UK. Called something like Bruce Springsteen plays the Pete Seeger songbook, I had never heard this band before. Very enjoyable and also highly recommended.

I've been thinking about trying to get my band to take a shot at Waist Deep in the Big Muddy by Pete. That or some depression era stuff. We already do Ohio I have fond recollection for music with social conscience and advocacy.

Mike; I feel the same way. I just recently watched for the second time part of Martin Scorsese's excellent documentary on Bob Dylan and it really brought home to me the power that music can have for helping to bring about social change.
