Had a chance to see Danno and Doomtree in NYC last night. Great stuff. Tight, grooving metal. In this city you rarely see that type of music anymore, unless it's an established band in one of the big venues (Tool, etc)- it's all about the post-punk Strokes type stuff with some vintage punk here and there (could be I'm just going to the wrong clubs). But this was good metal- fast, melodic and tighter than a (insert your own metaphor here).
Then there was the sound. Excellent sound. The thing I like most about Alembics is that they're so focused. No matter what kind of EQ you're playing, bassy or trebly, they take up this pocket in the mix and cut through perfectly without bleeding over anyone else. I don't know if that makes sense, but that's what I was thinking about. And the guitar players were both playing more 'hi-fi' equipment too. Not to knock anyone, but the band that got up after were playing more vintage stuff, and it's like they had to all turn up to be heard, but it was all muddy, so they'd turn up more, and it got kind of bright and messy. Doomtree was heavy as sh!t, but not loud at all, just clear and focused, if that makes any sense.
I'm a metal fan, but I don't play a lot of metal. I'd recommend Doomtree to just about anyone though. I can listen to Kind of Blue with the same enthusiasm as And Justice for All, and I think a lot of you guys would dig the way Doomtree's music is arranged and played. Think Iron Maiden's first two albums, then add 30 years. Oh and the southpaw lead guitar player was killer- a creative Tom Morello type. Very cool.
Lastly did I mention Danno lays down these heavy grooves and runs and fills while doing a heck of a lot of backup singing? Impressive.
And he's a nice guy too.
