Hi Guys!
Although not an Alembic user or even a bass player, I've been watching  this guy on Youtube.
IMHO this guy is unbelievable!!
Anyone give me more info on him, as I've only just come across him-shame on me.

George

From what I know of him, Shawn was born in Memphis, Tn. as the only son(in a family of sisters) and last child in his family. I believe when he was around 15-16 years old he had played with Black Oak Arkansas for a short amount of time. I think he did primarily studio work and released his first album in Powers of Ten in 1992. You might be able to find more material on him with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipes the drummer from Aquarium Rescue Unit.He passed away in 2004 or 2005.

September of 2003 is when he died of respiratory  failure. He was severely over weight at the time too. His mother has a site in his honor.

I got to play with the Zambiland Orchestra one night and I was wedged in between Shawn Lane (with Ross Martin on his other side, also no slouch on the 6 string) and Paul McCandless. I'll never forget it!

PS Paul was a hero of mine from way back as an ex oboe player.

Plays wind instruments. Last I saw was on the Flecktones 'live at the quick' dvd where he plays some stunning stuff through various effects pedals.

Paul also plays with Ralph Towener and the group Oregon (Bassist Glenn Moore well worth checking out on acoustic) as well as many others.  For those on the East Coast, we remember WNEW FM playing Icarus as an intro and outro to DJ's shows.

Paul McCandless also played on (imho) a lost treasure of the early 70s, an album by Paul Winter Consort called Common Ground. It featured duets with animals and jazz interpretations of whale songs, wolf howls, and sea hawk calls, and a sweet arrangement of Shoes Of A Fisherman, According to the liner notes, the Earth is primarily in Db (D flat).
I'm sorry for the loss of Shawn Lane. I was not aware of his music. I'll keep my eyes open.
Mike

The first time I heard Oregon, which has been a while now, I was blown away.  The Live At The Quick Flecktones DVD that Graeme mentioned is great stuff.

Oh, and George, thanks for this thread.  I was unfamiliar with Shawn Lane, but after reading your post, I spent a while watching videos, listening to soundclips and reading up on his collaborations with Jonas Hellborg and the Vinayakrams.  It's a genre that I've been interested in recently, so I found it quite valuable.
