I've just received my copy of the new 3cd + DVD set 'Forecast-Tomorrow' I've not had a chance to listen to the CDs yet but the DVD is incredible. Filmed in offenbach in 1978 it's probably the only professionally produced film there is on the band at what I consider to be the peak of their existence. Jaco's playing is nothing short of inspired, his solo slot had me transfixed and actually seeing him breeze through 'teen Town' has to be the highlight of the show. (can you tell I'm a fan?).

i'd highly recommend any weather Report or Jaco fan to get their hands on this collection. the CDs span the band's entire career so there's alot in there.

I have it ... got it for Christmas. Awesome is the word for the whole band!!! I was lucky enough to see Weather Report in Boston during the Heavy Weather tour in the mid/late 70s when I was a teen. Jaco was amazing then too. At that time his solo included playing bass patterns, harmonic chords and a top melody line. Kind of like what Victor W. has been known to do. This collection is a must for any progressive rock/jazz bass player or musician. A true collector's item.

I'm gonna try to pick it up today. Do you guys have Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology?

It's pretty awesome too. My personal favorite is Joni Mitchell doing Dry Cleaner from Des Moines Live. Jaco just goes off the hizzle in that performance.

What's the line up for Forecast-Tomorrow?
I've got Young and Fine LIVE on DVD from around the same period with Joe, Wayne, Jaco and Peter Erskine (the same roster as 8:30).

Mike, I think the DVD included in Forecast Tomorrow is the same as the Young and Fine Live release. Y&FL strikes me as a pseudo-bootleg release - on my copy the tracks numbers don't match up with the songs, and the quality is not that great, whereas the one included in the box set is nice and clean. I bought the box set and am glad I did - a lot of my Weather Report collection is on vinyl (much of it used and not in that great shape) and either scattered or (Mr.?) gone.

I, too, saw that Weather Report show at the Orpheum in Boston on Saturday, November 11th 1978. I almost blew it off, as I had spent the whole night up jamming with my band. I was also looking forward to the Grateful Dead on the 14th at the Music Hall. 6pm rolled around and I almost blew it off, but decided what the hell. Boy, am I glad I went. It was amazing (the Dead later that week weren't so bad, either). Later on the next summer I also caught the Joni Mitchell tour. Jaco was just at the top of his game at that time. If I recall correctly, those shows were all under $10.

Ah, those were the days!

I'm not sure if I saw them at the Orpheum or The Music Hall? Both places are similar in size and seating. I think I spent $8 for middle belcony seats at The Orpheum, (or possible The Music Hall) almost dead center around 5 rows back. Perfect view and sound. That was the show with John Mclaughlin and Shacktie (sorry for the spelling) as the warm up act. Right?? What a mind blowing concert! I went to several shows at The Music Hall but the Orpheum was my favorite place for a concert back in those days. (I wonder if it's still around? I almost never get into Boston for shows anymore.) I saw King Crimson there (Larks Tongues in Aspic tour) Gentle Giant there (Free Hand tour) Chich Corea and Return to Forever (When Al Dimeaola just joined the band) and I'm sure a few others that slip my mind right now. I also saw Chick with the Electric band and met him and the band at The Channel in Boston in the mid 80's. A friend of mine's girlfriend worked for the company who was the go between to get The Electric Band to play there so we had free tickets and back stage passes. Everyone was standing crammed in together and we were side stage in nice seats getting drinks served to us. ....... And met Chick and the band including John P. Awesome!
Anyway Edwin it's a cool coincidence we were at the same show. It WAS a special show. Being a bass player seeing a legend like Jaco perform live is like a guitarist seeing Hendrix. I've also seen of course Stanley and Victor W. Never saw Mark King or Jeff Berlin live though. Those two are in my opinion both on that same SPECIAL talent level of Stanley, Victor and dare I say Jaco. But none of the others IMO had the IMPACT Jaco had on the way bass can be played. That being said IMO they all touched a higher power through their playing. As bass players we're living in a special time to have the chance to not only be inspired by these guys but to actually SEE them perform and in some casses meet the legend!

Let's not forget Jaco's performance on Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light DVD. Outstanding.

Good call Rami. Aside from his solo, that dvd shows just how good he was at keeping the groove flowing while still being Jaco. His playing on 'the drycleaner from Des Moines' is superb.
I have the new jaco live in Montreux dvd coming sometime this week too. i'll post a review when it gets here.

The thing about the Shadow and Light DVD is that while it is one of Jaco's greatest live performances (and the rest of the crew) I know, the video has the annoying tendency to cut away from him whenever he is about to do some great stuff (i.e. most of the time). Obviously, the director or camera people back then had no idea where to look at or who these musicians actually are.

The Weather Report concert does a much better job in this respect.

I agree that on The Drycleaner from Des Moines Jaco's playing is spectacular. Anyone I know who wasn't familiar with Jaco and saw that concert would comment about how the Bass player really stole the show. He even made walking Bass lines cool and funky. Jaco was truly the greatest natural talent on Bass that I had ever seen.
It's too bad that there wasn't enough camera on him - I would have loved to see his hands in motion. He stood out in that concert at least as much as Joni Mitchell herself and left the rest of the band in the background, which is no small feat with top musicians like Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Don Alias and Lyle Mays on the stage!
He was truly the greatest.

Just ordered it. I have the Shadows and Light dvd. It's great. I'm lookin forward to the Weather Report dvd. Even with all the crazy cats around these days Jaco is still one of my favorites. I wish he were still here.
