My Fathers Day was a good day but also a day of somber soul searching. I?ll try to keep this short and not sound as though I?m preaching.

Both my daughters (ages 22 & 27) went to church with me. Took me out to lunch afterwards and then went home and spent the rest of the day at the house with me. I would say a very good father?s day indeed.

The dark side of my weekend; one of my oldest and closet friends had what I see as the single worst tragedy anyone could endure on this earth. You see his 17 year old daughter was killed in a single car accident Friday night. The driver, a 16 year buy, lost control of the car probably due to speed they believe and hit a tree on her side of the car. The paramedics say she died instantly.

His first chance to see her after the accident was Fathers day. He spent the rest of Fathers day planning his only daughter?s funeral.
How do you console a person after something like this? How do you tell them everything is going to be O.K. and that they will get over this, when you know that just isn?t true? This is a scar that will last forever.

My soul searching led me to realize that?s it?s not what we get for fathers day but what we already have that matters. We should act as though everyday is father?s day or mother?s day, or your child or spouse?s birthday, or your anniversary.

Treat everyone as though today is our last day.

Olie,

That is tragic indeed.  Condolences to both of you, recognizing that any I offer could never be enough.  That is every parent's worst nightmare.  Sorry for your loss.

Olie:

Sometimes there just isn't any answer.  This father's day was a mixed bag for me too ... it was my first father's ever without a father.  I called my mom in N.Y. and had a nice talk with her and then played pass the phone with my uncle and several cousins who were at my mom's.  As for my present, my wife pointed at the El Maya guitar I just got off ebay and said Happy Father's Day.  I took my 12 year old to the A's game last night. The two of us hanging together for a few hours is really what it's all about.  We must never take the jewels in our lives for granted, for we never know when things will change forever.

I'm in the same situation as you Bill. My dad passed away last November. Wasn't much of a Fathers Day. I spent the weekend fixing things up related to my folks house sale. I also helped my mom pack up the household stuff for her move to my sisters in Montana.
