OK, I am one of those who were eagerly waiting for the release of the iphone. I got one this weekend and it definitely did not disappoint. Yesterday, I dropped it from my desk. I would guess it is about a 3 foot drop and the screen shattered into a million pieces (litteraly). If there is any club members that are into Mac, I would like to know if any of you have used a third party company for repairs of ipods, imacs, etc.

I love having an iPod and I love having a cell phone, but I don't want them to be the same device for just this reason. I rely on my phone and need it to be a reliable and durable device. My iPod locks up on occasion and I can't afford for my phone to do that.

In answer to your actual question, I have sent two iPods back, both to Apple. I would wonder if a third party can do anything yet for such a new product? There probably isn't much in the way of parts available. I don't know if AT&T is offering insurance on the device, but I'd buy it.

I agree with Bob about the insurance Jorge. I'd never have a high end cell phone without the insurance.
For the few dollars a month it adds to your bill it's worth it.

It is my understanding that AT&T is not offering insurance for the iPhone. It is covered under Apple's warranty. I don't know if the warranty is going to help if a device was broken from a fall.

The warranty is not the same as insurance.

Apples warranty covers factory defects in the phone for a certain period of time usually 1 year.
AT& T's insurance should cover any problmes that arise from abuse, theft or accidents. i.e dropping the phone and breaking the screen.

Now it may be that AT & T won't cover the iPhone under their insurance. If this is the case make sure they are not charging you for insurance, usually $2 to $5 per per month per phone. But if they are charging you insurance and do cover the iPhone, by all means go to your local At & t dealer and pay the $50 deductible and get a new phone.

I just checked with AT & T's web site and Tom is correct. They DO NOT offer insurance for the iPhone.
Looke like you'll have to go thru Apple. OUCH!

Guys,
great topic. Im a a long-time Mac user and can?t await to get the iPhone here in Germany.
It is a shame that it is not possible to run one of the US ones here in Germany.
I read the development and consumer statements and I am really suprised about several issues, like the one above.
I was already prepared to switch to a new provider when the phone will be launched here in Germany.
But now I hear that the phone will be exclusively distributed by german T-Com which is like buying a Ferrari without engine but with two horses that are pulling the car.
I can?t understand Apple, T-Com is a big big company but their service is really really poor and masses of people go away from T-Com as their provider.
Well I am a real Mac fan and I need to get this phone, but signing a contract with a bad provider only to get the phone?

What do you think?

I'd wait. I would imagine that the iPhone will be offered from other service providers soon enough.

I believe when the RAZR came out it was Cingluar (I think)exclusive but now most all providers offer it.

Doesn't the Apple/ATT contract give ATT exclusive rights to the iphone for two years? If thats the case it will be a long wait for other carriers...

I am a dedicated Mac user. But I'll wait till the apps come out and the iPhone stabilises.

For the moment, my O2 XDA Orbit syncs seamlessly with my Macs via missing sync & bluetooth, and it works for me. Plus I get to run my GPS software which the iPhone can't do right now.

Am impressed with Leopard OS though. Cannot wait for that.

Actually I'm not surprised they've selected T-com - AT&T and T-Com are both dinosaurs of the telecom industry.

Boy, am I glad that I live in a country where Apple does not want to sell iPhones ... we must have the greatest mobile network on earth. (This from one who carries a mobile which is only switched on if the owner wants to make a call.)

I really enjoy the speed at which this hype has died ...

Like anything, the improvements will come along and different materials will be incorporated. I've been a Mac user since the early 90's. Performa, G3, G4, G5 and an intel mini (my least favorite) From a design standpoint I feel they are far superior. To me they seem engineered for the future, not just the present. Wireless, firewire, etc. all before the PC world thought folks needed it.
Those who have the iPhone that I know are amazed at its features and design. Insurance is a great idea for phones and ipods. Gravity will not be ignored.

How about this: The battery is soldered in place, will cost $80+7 shipping to replace, and you have to send your phone in for 3 days. You call this innovation? LMAO!!! The piece of $600.00 junk that it is....
