The Guild was a pawnshop purchase. For years I wanted an Alembic, but rationalized to myself that they were just basses. I walked into the little shop in the sticks and the red and white ax almost jumped out of the mix of the other guitars. When I saw it had Alembic pickups, (and saw the price) I bought it and launched this Alembic passion. I though to myself if a bass sounds this good with replacement pickups, just think what a real Alembic would sound like.
Then I bought the Epic off of eBay at a pretty good price. I was looking for a 6 string bass. The power and sustain were simply incredible. I played with a friend who is really into high-end guitars and he said it had the best sustain of any bass he had ever played with.
Then came the Mark King. It was also an eBay purchase. If you look closely one of the very tips of the heart Omega cut is broken off. The nice seller also sent the tip and someday I hope to send it to the Mothership for repairs done right. (It has the Fat Boy pickups and has a slimmer neck than most of my other 4 string basses. It is lightning fast and sounds like thunder.)
The Series I bass came next and it was on consignment at Gruhns in Nashville. I looked at it for weeks and weeks on their website and went and played it . Keith at Gruhns and I took it outside of Gruhns and literally had a tour bus full of tourists all looking out their windows, while stopped at the intersection of 3rd and Broadway in Nashville. A guy dressed in a suit came strolling by and said, Wow is that an Alembic! I had taken it into the back room at Gruhns to play it and when I fired it up I thought This is the best bass I have ever heard. Then I discovered that I only had one pickup selected and when the second pickup kicked in I was simply floored.
Then I started looking for an Alembic guitar and she came up on eBay and I put in a bid about two hours after it was listed and I never expected the bid to hold, but it did.
The sound of the guitar and basses (recorded together) are very powerful and distinctive.
Sam, yes they all have their own rig and then some. (I am not only an Alembicaholic (sp) but a gearaholic as well.
