Author Topic: My Guitar Shelf Survived Moma Nature's E Ticket Ride! (Read 233 times)

Some of you may remember the shelf I built to store guitars. You can see it and the discussion about it here. (Scroll down 1/3 of the way). Well, it was tested last night. About 4:45 a.m., the family was awakened by one heckuva jolt. EARTHQUAKE! And not the usual 3.2 jobby either. I'm hearing 4.2 to 4.5 this morning, though reports are that it felt much stronger in the Montclair hills near the epicenter - right where I live! Surveying the damage, we were quite lucky. A few things knocked off the shelves, water sloshed out of the fish tank, pictures and paintings hanging helter skelter on the walls, a bit of dirt to clean up behind the big screen where the orchid fell. All guitars made it through with flying colors and my engineering skills have been affirmed - the guitar shelf held!
California - never a dull moment!

that's the main reasion why i moved away from the SF Bay area!

As a person who grew up in the New York area and moved to California after High School, I would gladly deal with a 10 second earthquake every few years than shovel snow 3 months a year! lol

Glad to hear things turned out ok.

I was living in the Bay area for the Morgan Hill quake in 1984 and the Loma Prieta quake in 1989.
I have also gone through several hurricanes including Fran in 1996. While an earthquake is quite unnerving I think I would rather go through that than a decent size hurricane. With an earthquake it is over quickly so you can start to deal with it. With a hurricane it goes on and on. To me the wait for a hurricane to end is more stressful.

Thanks for the concern. The worst damage I've heard about so far is a Safeway supermarket in Berkeley that had a couple of large windows shatter and spray the checkout stands with broken glass. Fortunately, at 4:42 a.m., there was no one shopping or there would have been some injuries. 4.2 - 4.5 isn't all that big - the 1989 Loma Prieta (world series) quake was 7.2. However, in the Montclair hills, where I live over the Hayward fault, it was stronger than anywhere else in the Bay Area.

Bill, glad everything is okay, and good job on the shelf! That's a good reason to keep your guitars in their cases when not being played. The epicenter was near Joaquin Miller-Hwy 13, about 2 miles from you. My parent's house is a mile closer, but they felt nothing and had nothing amiss inside. Go figure!

It is weird who felt it and who didn't. My buddy who lives just down the hill in Piedmont didn't feel a thing. My landlord, who lives on the island of Alameda in the Bay off of Oakland was awakened and called first thing this morning to check on the house.

I'm glad everything is OK, Mother nature has a way of making you feel SMALL !!!
That F-5 Tornado that came through Moore Okla. back in 1999 missed me by 4 blocks, it had a wind speed of 318 MPH (Fastest wind speed ever recorded on earth)

I've given some thought to where the least natural-disaster-ridden part of the country is and haven't really come up with an ideal spot. There's no place that's completely safe from mother nature as far as I can tell.

Bill,

Glad to hear you guys skated through another. Ever consider moving here to Chicago? The only time you feel the ground shake is if you're standing under the 'L' tracks.
