HELP! How do I record/send sound samples here?
« on: October 13, 2007, 09:37:31 AM »
The title sez it all.  I'm TOTALLY ignorant about this.  I've had a couple requests to send sound samples of my new 6-string Coco Bolo MK Signature Deluxe here (and my awesome 8-string Bocate Europa -for that matter).

I have no idea how to do it.  No, first of all, I DON'T have any recording equipment.  But maybe it's possible to hook a jack -with an adaptor- directly into my girlfriends Dell computer?

I just don't know at all how it's done; I'm guessing I'd have to either record something digitally on to a CD/DVD and load it into the computer and/or record it directly into the computer into/onto some sort of digital sound file.  Despite my ignorance, I'm cognizant of the fact that a digital medium is required.

So... can one (of more) of the nice & helpful club members fill in the blanks here?  If I've gotta go buy a digital recorder, I'll be SOL for now; but if I just need an adaptor that I can get from Radio Shack, and can record directly into the computer and send through the upload attachment feature we use to load pictures... I could probably work that out with a little help.

Thanks gang!

Hi Mark,

I now have the ability with an interface... but there was a time when I used only an adapter to the microphone jack of the computer.  Get a 1/4 instrument jack (female) on one end and a 1/8 microphone plug (male) on the other (like this http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062446&cp=&parentPage=search).

You can then do simple recordings with an inherent windows program called Sound Recorder found under Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder (at least all the way to XP - don't know about Vista).  This allows you to save a WAV file (quite a large file).  You can then use several different audio programs to convert to a much smaller size such as an MP3 file.  A free player at www.musicmatch.com can convert files from the dropdown menu File>Convert Files... from WAV to MP3.

Due to fact that these files can exceed forum standards.  You should upload them into a personal space provided by your local ISP (or another free storage service).  Generally all ISP users are given some space to create and store web based items. You would then create a link in the thread to the item in your ISP space.

Hope that this helps,

Art

Thanks, Art.  Since it's only a few bucks, I'll get the adapter next time I'm at Radio Shack, and then see if I can do the next step on my own -or with the help of my computer-savvy girlfriend.

Hey, howz the Alembic search going?

Nothing definitive as of yet but I am hopeful.

Let me know if you have any questions about the recording process I described.
