i went fishing this afternoon
was doing well on porgys
hooked into a 12 lb bluefish
what a fight
took 1/2 hr to bring him to the boat
it jumped out of the water 2x
i got it onboard
i cut the gills to bleed it
i thought it was dead,,,,,,,,,,
 
here it comes
 
i forgot golden rule #1
 
NEVER EVER PUT YOUR FINGERS NEAR A BLUEFISHES MOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the fish bit me and got my finger.......
my left forefinger= yes
the nose picker.......
bloody mess
thank goodness i have medical stuff on board
i had to pick up anchor and drive back to the dock
i went to the emergency room
i will need surgery thursday so they can  give it a day to breath since the bastards mouth is so filthy
tetanus shot in my right arm
no nerve damage though
i may end up with a dented finger right on the pad.......
when they say razor sharp?
they mean razor sharp.......
oye
i am so angry with myself
i know better,,,,,,
 
but
 
 
 
i will enjoy eating that SOB@@@@@@@@@@@
revenge is a dish best served in szechuan garlic sauce and rice,,,,,,,

I have a similar scar on the tip of my left thumb- Freshwater eels are native to NZ and a big part of Maori and Pakeha culture there.  The first time I went eeling with a buddy we caught a big one and the sucker bit through the nail and down to the bone.  
 
Don't ask me what I was doing with my thumb in it's mouth... them teeth are sharp.

Are you sure you didn't also bang your head?  You wrote: i will enjoy eating that SOB.  We are talking about a BLUEFISH, right?  Every recipe I've ever heard of for bluefish is a way to cook it in a manner so that it won't taste like BLUEFISH!  Pound for pound, the most fighting fish in the ocean.  Unfortunately, also one of the oilest.  I used to catch a 7 p.m. bluefish boat out of Sheepshead Bay, motor out to the Hole off the Jersey coast for about 3 hours, then fish all night and early morning, returning to the dock around 6 a.m.  
 
12 lbs!  That's quite a fish.    
 
Good luck with the recuperation.  And hey, you might want to look to Django Reinhardt for inspiration

Uh, Flax, I'm glad it's not serious... and I don't wanna seem unsympathetic... but I just have to say...
 
I can kind of understand him chomping at'cha... considering one moment he's fishing around in his watery environment, and then the next, he's being yanked out to be made a meal for your tummy!
 
Think about it.  Imagine your sitting around playing the Wolf, and you see a little doobie (with a thin invisible string) and you grab it, and next thing, you're yanked into the water where you can't breathe, so this fish can make you a meal...
 
Could anyone blame you if you bit him?  Should the other fishes condemn you for your actions?
 
Bill, I'm especially disappointed in you.  There are two sides to every story, and I think you should offer your services pro bono as an advocate for the fish.
 
Just saying, guys... think about the fish' perspective...

In the old days, they would leave the blues until you were on the way back in before they'd clean them.  The result was always heavy and oily.  I miss fishing Montauk, but still get to the shore in RI a few times per year.  The sooner you clean/filet a blue after catching, the better the result.  Stripers can be bled immediately and cleaned later with good result.

Good that you were able to get it looked at promptly.  It's not uncommon for the result to be much worse when a mistake like this is made.
