So I was not really planning on a big trip this year, I was going to be content to just take time off from work and chill at home, and do a day trip here and there, one of which would include the Martin factory which is not too far from me.

But, today my brother hit me with a curveball. His son bailed out at the last minute on a trip to vienna and prauge for seven days, and I have a chance to take his place, all expenses paid for. I mean ALL expenses. Id have to come up with money for food and trinkets but that is it.

The problem is, Im paranoid about leaving home for that length of time. Not only do I have an expensive bass collection, but Ive got a large and expensive gun collection. Even though I live in an isolated area, crime IS starting to make its way here.

How do others handle going away and leaving valuables at home when you go away?

Have a trusted friend house sit while you are gone..

Do you have an alarm system through anyone? That would alleviate the fears. A good gun safe? Some close friends nearby with whom you could house your best gear while you're away? At a minimum, good insurance would be a must, but you'd want that all the time.

Personally, we have canceled a trip for a concern like that, but our immediate neighbor's house had been targeted and we saw a van sort of parked in front of our house during the week before we were leaving. That seemed a bit more imminent than a generic concern.

At this point in the economy, it seems that crime is on the rise and I expect more before things get better. Even so, you can't put your life on pause because of it. How often do you get to go on a trip like that? It seems like a great opportunity, and you should find a way to make it happen.

One thing I always do is set light timers in various rooms that are sequenced to look like we are at home. I also have auto-sensor flood lights on the more hidden areas of my house since potential thieves don't like light. While they aren't foolproof they will usually deter the opportunistic/casual thief.

In this day and age I would have a gun safe. On any break in guns are some of the first things grabbed. I've also been looking at a gun safe for my basses. Not only would it make them harder to steal but should give them some protection in the event of a fire.

If I were you I would go on the trip and enjoy it. After all something like this does not come along everyday.

Insurance, ADT or Guardian alarm (with lots of yard signs) and a friend to watch the house while you're gone (and not tell everybody he's watching your house while you're gone!) would seem to me to cover it. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime to me. If you're really THAT concerned, it might be worth renting secured-storage. The gun safe suggestion is a good one, as basses typically don't realize they're not guns for a good two weeks or so..

You could always disperse your guns and basses amongst the rest of us here, just for safe keeping. Olie should probably do the same, come to think of it..

Tresspassers Will Be Shot On Sight......a Giant sign like that one always works.....it worked for me when i used to Jump my neighbors fence to steal his weed plants LOL!!!!
