USA Tacoma Guitars?
« on: April 18, 2009, 09:14:19 PM »
Does anyone know much about these acoustic guitars?

I have been doing a bit of research and it appears to be a USA guitar maker in Tacoma, Wash., (or was) bought by Fender in 2004 and likely to be, or already has been, dismantled. I played a couple of these guitars recently and was very, very impressed.

I have a fondness for small USA guitar companies. Any information or insight into the guitars and the company would be appreciated.

They made a nice acoustic bass, one of the better production ones on the market.  I'm not sure if their guitar models differentiated themselves as well, but there's much more competition there.

Bob, thanks for the reply.

I was wondering if anyone who knows about these guitars think they will hold their value, increase or decrease over the years since production has likely ceased and they are high-quality American made guitars.

I don't know which particular Tacoma model you are considering, but a quick overview on the Blue Book of Guitars reveals that they have tended to hold their value over the last 4 or 5 years.

Bill, it is a JR55 (Jumbo Rosewood and 55 series is the highest end model)

This is the flagship model (I have been told).

It has the great three piece Rosewood back like the high end Martins, ebony fretboard, Abalone inlay and maple binding. As beautiful and nice playing and sounding acoustic as I have ever played (no perhaps the best in those categories.)

David:

Here's more info on the JR55
MSRP in 2006(model discontinued that year): $2,400
Condition/value:
100%: $1800
Exc:  $1050-$1250
Avg:  $675-800

These prices have held steady since 2006.

I was tempted by their acoustic baritone some time back.  From what I recall of ebay auctions, used models tended to sell pretty close to the same cost as when new.

I saw a couple of Tacoma guitars at the Dallas Guitar show this past weekend. They were priced in the $1200 to $1500 dollar range.
