We decided that our cat jack needed a new buddy since his old one is getting on and sleeps a lot and is deaf.  
I tried going through some places online only to be met with over the top applications that were inane and sometimes pretty invasive. One site wanted to visit our home before letting us adopt.
some of the better questions?
if someone in your home became allergic to the kitten what would you do?= answer- shoot them
Why did you change vets?= because they were inept
Will you be able to make a long term committment to this animal- no- we plan on eating her for dinner moron.  
 
so i ended up calling a shelter about 50 miles away and they called back saying they had 2 female kittens. road up there,scoped them out, picked one and gave them $100 donation. the form took 5 minutes to fill out.
we were hoping to find a kitten that would get along with the 2 cats and our 2 dogs. After 2 days, our new kitten named FLASH gets along with everyone,
Pootie playes with her all the time and watches after her. We even caught flash trying to suckle- she's only 8 weeks btw.  
so i am trying to figure if these animals can get along why cant the dems and reps?

Easy, dems and reps are lower life forms! But, not as low as some of the animal adoption folks. I went through the same thing you did twenty years ago, trying to adopt a retired greyhound. The Greyhound Adoption Neo-Nazis we talked to were incredibly invasive and incredibly stupid! The head adoption-person / privacy invader told us that all the dogs were tatooed with a serial number (this is pre digital implant days.) Several minutes later we're told that, if I get a call from the pound that they have picked up one of our dogs, I call all the owners who have dogs that match the description of the dog at the pound. My head kind of did a 360 degree Exorcist spin, Why would you call all these people when the dog has a serial number? My next words were, Thank you for your time, we'll think about it.

I agree that rescue animals are the best, it's just a shame that rescuing one is nearly on par with the hassle of adopting a human, or getting a loan these days!

My kitten Emily is about 11 months now, and lots o'fun...quite bent, you can see it in her eyes; in other words, perfect for me!
 
SPCA here is crazy for adoption too, and expensive...thankfully Emily came from friend of a friend(showed up on their doorstep)

Reminds me of my 2 childhood pets.  I had a cat and a Saint Bernard.  The cat ruled the roost for the most part and treated the dog with contempt (as cats are prone to do)... until the dog got sick.  For the last week of the dog's life the cat rarely left his side.

St. Bernard - now THERE'S a dog!  I've had 2 they're the best.  Sometimes even they need to be rescued, like the this unfortunate gal...

Around here abandoned critters just show up. Our most recent dog showed up in the yard and wouldn't leave.  After a couple of days, our 8-year old decided to see if she could put a collar and leash on him, and they ran around playing for a couple of hours.  The next morning when my partner went out to get the mail, the dog picked up the collar and leash and carried them over to her.
 
OK, buddy, you're adopted...
 
We didn't have a name for him for the longest, but after observing him interacting with Ruby and Rosie, our 2 Lab mix mutts, we decided Roger was fitting, if not entirely appropriate.
