Author Topic: Need Advice on Wire for Patch Cables (Read 141 times)

I'm moving my stomp boxes off the floor and putting them in a rack with a Voodoolab Audio Switcher and Ground Control. I need to make a buttload of patch cables to hook the boxes to the Switcher. I bought a bunch of 1/4 connectors off of ebay for a good price. Now I need to get some wire to make the patch cables. I need something that is fairly flexible, doesn't color the sound, and will hold up. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated. I know of no better resource for this kind of info than the denizens of this site.

I have a friend here in Fayetteville whom I've known now for over 10 years, by the name of Mark Stoddard. He owns his own custom cable business, called Lava Cable (www.lavacable.com). He knows his stuff about cable, no doubt. All of my patch cords for my pedalboard and rig were made by him. Top notch stuff. He offers a variety of cable, as well as custom made guitar, amp, pedal, etc. cables if you're interested. If nothing else, his website (and Mark himself) can give you a bit info on the differences between different brands of cable. Check him out - I heartily recommend him not because he's my friend, but he makes really good stuff and backs it up.

Hi Bill ,
Belden 8410 one conductor 25AWG 52OHM high impedance shielded cable would work for your application if you plan to make your own. Try AL LASHERS ELECTRONICS in Berkeley, Ca.@ ph#510-843-5915 . They are our last REAL electronics parts house that we have locally in Alameda Co.and I like to support their business when ever I can. Electronics Plus in San Rafael is also one of the last over in Marin Co.

For the internals of my rack, I used Mogami 2524. It's shield is wrapped, not braided, so itis SUPER easy to work with. Combine this cable with high quality Neutrik connectors, and you should be set for life!

Thanks guys. Your responses pointed me in the right direction to do my research. I just ordered 60 ft. of Mogami 2319. It's a little thinner than the 2524, but should be just right for my stompbox rack project with runs of less than 2 ft. I checked out the lavacable website, but couldn't find any bulk cable for sale.

Alan; what kind of turnaround time does he have? The last order I placed with Bayou Cable took quite awhile as he was pretty backed up at the time.

I got some relatively inexpensive ones from Orange County Speaker - a company I found on ebay that has some excellent deals. (I recently bought their version of the Shure SM58, which sells for less than $30!, and it appears to be a pretty good mike - very similar to the Shure!) Anyway the connector brand is GLS Audio. I found some good reviews about them on the net. I got some of the old fashioned flat 90 degree connectors, and some straits. I plan on using some George L's I already have for the very short (
