I'm going to see Gogol Bordello, and I'm pretty excited. If you are unfamiliar with them, they hail from a variety of nationalities, and their music is a synthesis of traditional Gypsy music and Punk Rock. Here's a link to their video for the song Not a Crime.

I could see how one might think that Bill. Actually, their name partly comes from the works of Nikolai Gogol (the father of Russian Realism literature), and well, I guess the other part is obvious. There was actually a documentary recently released about the lead singer Eugene Hutz, that traces his origins to the Ukraine, and gives a taste of the modern day life of the Roma (as Gypsies prefer to be called). http://www.thepiedpiperofhutzovina.com

You also might have caught him in the recent feature film Everything is illuminated (2005), where he played a supporting role to Elijah Wood. I enjoyed the film quite a bit. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404030/

They are also listed among Rolling Stone and Virgin media's top 20 live acts. So anyway, I guess you could say I've done my research.

How was the show?
Shortly after I became aware of them, two years or so ago, I caught the episode of the Henry Rollins Show where he had them on as the guest band.
During the performance, my son walked into the room and stopped dead in his tracks, staring. He had absolutely no idea what to think but couldn't stop watching. LOL. I knew then that GB was the best band I was going to hear that year.

I can honestly say it was one of the best bands that I have seen in a long time. Non-stop energy, lots of people on stage, and a excellent selection of my favorite GB songs. I was impressed how the crowd recognized and respected all members of the band, and not just the charismatic front man, who I assumed would steal the show. I would highly recommend catching them if you have a chance.

The more I age (okay, I'm only 31, but anyway), the less live shows appeal to me. Something about fighting the crowd, and the insane decibel levels just doesn't have the appeal it used to for me. It really has to be a special show to get me interested, and often I end up wondering whether I would have been more wise to stay home with my wife and son. I have no regrets for this one, and I've been humming their songs for days now. Anyway, I've gone on long enough.

The little bit I heard kind of reminds me of the Leningrad Cowboys.
