Plywood guitar anyone?
« on: September 04, 2009, 05:59:59 AM »
In the past cheap guitars made of cheap plywood were sneered at but  now Gibson have made such a guitar using multiple laminates of dyed birch.

I've always been impressed with the sound of the SG and the neck profile, but thought they look pretty fugly. However,  these look very retro and the sound clips sound good on the clean setting. They'd be great on an MTV video. :-)

The web site looks like it's been done at Apple computers as it has a similar look to theirs.

I can't imagine Alembic would want to make a guitar with so many laminations although.

Those necks are pretty wild looking.  I wonder how they sound.

Other than the psych-o-delic look, I wonder if there are any real benefits to this type of construction.

The neck by itself will be pretty strong - I remember someone trying to smash up an early-to-mid 70s Matsumoku guitar with that type of neck (bolt-on) - the body broke off, and the neck was unscathed.

In a photo I think they look really cool. I wonder how it feels/looks in person. It seems like there are not many truly new ideas these days, these qualify in my book. Too bad I'm not a guitarist......

Kubiki basses had necks with a similar glue/wood ratio, and Fender did the whole died wood thing w/ their line of Wildwood Coronado's... and the pickups look like the ones Gibson used on the Maruader. Honestly, there's nothing new here, just a bunch of borrowed mediocre ideas.

I remember once I had some fungus, and the next thing I know my Distillate's neck looked like it was plywood and it was wrapping backwards around me . . .

I kinda like the top. Reminds me of Peter Max/Yellow Submarine. Solid color back and solid color neck would suit my tastes better.

I can't say I'm fond of the other color combos offered, but it's a good thing we don't all like the same thing.

Remember John Cipollina   ? He liked to do his own custom projects
modifying The Gibson SG   . I like what he did both musically and other custom innovations with his amplifier set up . Those Wurlitzer horns were something else____

Bsee i'd say you nailed it! Looks just like a mcmillian stock for a 10/22 ruger at my local gun store, only it was all purple!! Also Sonicus, I can totally envision Cippolina (rest in peace) with this guitar in front of that crazy contraption that was his amp. You know kinda reminds me of the Eric Clapton Cream era Psycadellic paint job thingey too.
