The Chop Shop by request CHOP"S 101
« Reply #15 on: July 27, 2009, 09:15:22 PM »
I just started this morning...no not brave yet : )
I pulled it apart a bit and looped the separate styles to dig in a bit.
I'll keep at it, maybe my pride and bravery will kick in.

Come on guys, the Chops are easy, but just when you lay down a pattern to get use to the groove, then go back and challenge yourself and it get's hard again, especially on meter and expression, it's endless if you make it that way and take it to the limit, but in the end you know what you are really capable of playing, thus you know your limits and your chops.
When you hear a bass player do a solo or let's say a fast line during a song and when he comes back to hit one the 1 count he's slightly off, it takes him a second or two to get back on, he stepped out of the box to try something that he wasn't sure of nor was he properly prepared for, he just stepped out of the box, took a gamble and hoped it would all work out, this exercise will help you to prevent that happening to you. more to come shortly enjoy, John

I looped the whole song, but the changes come rapidly so it is a challenge to get 'settled in' to the groove.

Plus since I was listening through the computer upstairs ('lectric stuff is downstairs) I was doing it on my upright, which often lends itself (actually me and my skill level) to slower phrasing! :-D

Same to you Kimberly, I heard nothing but good things about you around here, upside down lefty, very interesting!...I just got through will a recording I did where I played guitar on it also and I reversed the guitar solo in the program to give it a bow effect, but when I was writing it and playing I have to play and think backwards so when I flipped the part the notes would come out where I approximately needed then to be at. Lot's of fun and challenging to say the least.

Nice mix of rhythms, I did a 7 note riff based on Am7 and when it went to the funky style, kept the same chord but placed rests to add space.
I love playing around with one chord(doesn't mean I only know one as I can guess your laughs from you lot out there).
In the jazz/latin band I am in we wrote a tune based around Gm7, just by adding the the occasional 7th, 9th, 11th & 13th notes and modes you can create that out of the box feel.
Need more drums please!!

Nicely done Terry, I am in the process of putting something special together over the weekend for the Chops 101 people who I already sent so being you are already on the list you will automatically receive it. This is a great way to develop some stop and go method with a mixture of riffs and finding a part that can be played throughout the entire drum grooves. Trying finding one that you can play through all the parts and not lose it is a challenge at first but real makes things come alive in your way of thinking and accenting, thus becomes the ChopS.
