Screen capture needed
« on: October 01, 2009, 05:51:04 PM »
I've been asked to help with an inbox overload problem.  I do not have my profile set up to have Alembic posts emailed to me; and I thus have no idea what they look like.  Could someone who does get posts emailed to them please do a screen shot so that I can have some idea of what information is shown where.  Specifically, (and to those of you who have been paying attention, this is probably obvious) I'm wondering where the username shows up; is it part of the sender info, or in the title, or in the body of the text?  Ultimately, the solution will be to identify a spam filter program or add-in that will identify and filter the username.  If anyone has any suggestions for that solution, or any solution, please let me know, and I will forward the solution to the club member with the overflowing inbox.

Thanks Adriaan and Graeme!

So I think we have established that the username is in the body of the text.

Perhaps a more useful screen would be for the name of the thread, which appears in the subject line of the email as well as the body of the text.

I have Microsoft Outlook as my email program, and in looking at the options it appears that no additional add-on or other spam program is needed.

In Outlook, right click on the mail message you wish to filter.

Click on Create Rule.

If you wish to filter out messages from a particular thread, then click Subject Contains.  The name of the email subject is already shown, but can be modified if desired.

Then click Move The Item To Folder and click on Select Folder to chose your Junk folder or other destination.

Click on Ok.  You'll be asked if you want to go ahead and run the filter on all messages in the current folder (presumably your inbox); if you click yes, it will then move all messages with the name of the particular thread to your junk folder.  And your done.

If you want to filter a particular username, that can be done too.

Again, right click on the message, and click Create Rule.

Click Move The Item To Folder and click on Select Folder to chose your Junk folder or other destination.

In the bottom right of the window, click Advanced Options.

Click on With Specific Words In The Body.

In the bottom of the window where it says Step 2, click on the underlined Specific Words.

Where is says specify a word or phrase, type in the username, and then click Add, and then Ok.

Now click Finish.

To run this rule now, click Tools, then Rules And Alerts, then Run Rules Now, then choose the rule and click Run Now.  Here you can also edit your rules.

If you don't have Outlook, your program may have similar rule making options.  If it doesn't, there may be add-ons for your program that do, or you may be able to find spam software that will do the job.

For Mozilla Thunderbird you can create a message filter. It is under the Tools pull down. It will let you filter on just about anything in a note and direct it to any folder you wish (or delete immediately).

to my provider I can use spamfilter but I will receive nothing more from Alembic. It's not possible to select this thread or another because the sending adress is exactly the same. I never use outlook or other mail program like thunderbird.

Yes Dave, I meant Thunderbird. Thank goodness it's Friday. I've corrected my update.

Most (if not all) e-mail interfaces allow you to automatically move messages as they arrive. The thread notifications are sent by
club@alembic.com, so you can set this up for that specific sender.

Adriaan; that's not his problem.  He wants to be able to filter out only certain messages from club@alembic.com.  His provider appears to be orange.fr.  I tried the orange.co.uk site, but I could not get the help screen for email to load.  Perhaps you can glance at the one in french and see if you can find any filtering tools.

Pierre-Yves,
My ISP only has minimal filtering which is why I use a full feature e-mail client. Unfortunately this is an issue with your provider not the Alembic Forum. If you do not wish to use an e-mail client you might need to create an account for Alembic on something like Yahoo web mail. Yahoo allows filtering on address, subject and body.
