Amp stand recommendations
« on: January 17, 2010, 10:49:14 AM »
I am going to be playing some smaller places so I will only be needing a 2X10 cabinet and my rack. In order to hear myself a little better and make it easier to access my rack I am thinking of putting it all on a stand. I see a lot of tilt back stands for guitar combo amps and keyboard stands but nothing that is horizontal and robust weight wise. I am looking at raising the bottom of the speaker 20-24 inches with a weight of 140-150 lbs. Anyone have or know of something that would fit my requirements?

Milk crates.  Not only do they do the job, but at the end of the gig you turn them over and fill them up with cords, stomp boxes, whatever.  And the price is right.  If you want something that looks better and don't mind spending more, check out ampriser.com.  I haven't tried one personally, but they look pretty cool.

If you look around, sometimes you can find the rarest of gems: the steel milk crate!  I have one that is full of chainsaw stuff at the moment..

The beauty of the milk crate is that they are exceptionally stable when stacked.

I used to play with a  Drummer who would use a Steel milk Crate as a 'Work Stand for his old Knucklehead Harley-Davidson Motorcycle  when taking off the wheels .

I think some folk here use the hemp ones. But the resins can stick to the carpet  on stage. But remember crates are only free if you steal them.

I didn't even think of milk crates. I have 6 or 7 of those in my garage filled with stuff and in my studio holding PA cables.

I can say my crates were free. The company that supplies milk where my wife manages quit using the crates and told her to take as many as she wanted.

My thanks to Bill and the others for the suggestion.

Milk it for all it's worth.  They're whey butter than other alternatives.  Free ones are the cream of the crop.

I've used milk crates in this application, but because they look cheesy on stage I would cover them with a some fabric, like a tablecloth. Also, there is a significant change in your sound if you de-couple the cabinet from the floor.

I had a flight case built for my Goliath cabinet and used the top of that to set the cabinet on.  It seemed to be sturdy enough to use with both cabinet and head.

if you want to tilt the cab back...I use a Quick-LoK amp stand. Very sturdy and you can adjust the angle. It folds up small. highly recommend it. about 40- to 50 bucks.
