The Roots band has a TUBA player on the set!
« on: February 05, 2010, 03:05:53 PM »
I thought I seen it all, but I hadn't seen nothing until I saw the Roots Band!

With much love the Tuba horns get's from Symphony Orchestra, or a collegiate Marching Band environment, is now on stage with the Roots BAND breaking winds, and playing some mean bass lines!

It might look strange, but the music is hot playing along side an electric bass.

Peace and Love,

Hal-

the roots have had a tuba player for a long time. you want to heard some monster tuba playing? check out sam rivers' big band records Culmination and Inspiration. those have some ridiculous arrangements (with tuba and electric, as well), and some of the only legit tuba solos i've ever heard. great stuff.

The Dirty Dozen Brass band showcases some pretty awesome sousaphone, if you've never checked them out.

+1 on the Dirty Dozen. Also check out Howard Johnson for some legit bebop tuba. He's the real deal. http://www.hojozone.com/

A friend of mine who used to be principal Tuba player with the Cincinnati Symphony considered Charles Daellenbach of the Canadian Brass to be the best Tuba player out there. I second Wolf's opinion of  his rendition of The Flight of the Bumblebee.

Herbie Flowers, Bass player with huge bands like Sky and T.Rex as well as being the bass behind 'walk on the wild side' is famous for dressing as Noddy (UK kids TV character) and playing a Tuba solo.  A very talented guy.

Is Noddy the same character as Ian Dury & The blockheads sang about years ago?

Yes, Dury had a certain way with words didn't he. Noddy has his own website.

For some reason, the first Noddy I would think of is Noddy Holder, of Slade fame. Must be due to his appearance on a Christmas special with Bob the Builder, and the many, many, many, many, many, many, many times that we played that video for our son.

A band I'm in (Local Disturbance) once had a trombonist (actual real name: Dr. Noe!) and the combination of the bass guitar and the trombone sounded awesome!
