Hello Everyone,

Starting next week tickets will become available for our April 17th show in Los Angeles. We will be opening for Jeff Beck!
You may or may not know this but Frank and Jeff were friends and played together for fun on a few occasions. They discussed making a record together. I would have loved to have heard that.

See you in LA.

DZ

Dweezil's band, Zappa plays Zappa (ZPZ) is one of the best band around right now. Anyone who is a fan of Frank's and just of great live music should go check em out. Seen them quite a few times already and they are just great players playing great music. Dweezil has definitely hit another level entirely with his guitar playing.

I've seen ZPZ 3 times...twice with Ray White from Frank's bands.  I saw the You Can't Fit On Stage Anymore tour...they broke out Billy the Mountain...absolutely incredible!

Unfortunately, the digital downloads of the particular shows we saw never quite came to fruition...I REALLY wanted to hear that jaw dropping version of G-Spot Tornado from the Birchmere again. In the end they sent us the download from the 1st show of that tour, in Chicago...complete with Ray White as the assistant Illinois Enema Bandit...two thumbs up!

I've got it
I'll be sullen and withdrawn
I'll dwindle off into the twilight realm
Of my own secret thoughts
I'll lay on my back here 'til dawn
In a semi-catatonic state
And dream of guitar notes
That would irritate
An executive kinda guy . . .

Thank you Craig, for this heads up.

I just purchased 4 tickets. I have been waiting for the right show to finally audition the Nokia Theater, and I have been barred by circumstance from seeing any previous L.A. appearances of ZPZ.

Oh yeah, Jeff whats-his-name might be kinda cool too.

My only fear is that Dweezil won't hold up for me. Seeing his dad play were the highlights of my live music experience. I can't imagine trying to follow in his footsteps. But I'm gonna find out for myself!

After some initial skepticism, I watched some video clips and was pleasantly impressed. I was looking at his guitar thinking, Hey, that looks just like Frank's SG, when I realized, Hey, that probably IS Frank's SG...

Dweezil's SG is not Frank's. Its a custom made SG, stock straight from the factory. Its a very nice guitar with some incredible tone.

As for Dweezil, check him out, you will not be disappointed. His playing is very different from Franks but Dweezil actually took 2 years off from day to day touring and everything to study Frank's music. His guitar playing has really taken off. He is an amazing soloist right now. No one can play like Frank but Dweezil is certainly doing his dad justice. Dweezil's journey and what he is not only attempting, but actually pulling off, is truly awe inspiring. I have seen Dweezil get choked up and cry during solos, he reveres his father and his fathers music and does it justice to say the least.

I cannot imagine living in that kind of shadow and yet he is embracing it and he has assembled one of the best bands I have ever seen in my life. Every one of them is an amazing musician. If you ever get the chance to meet him he is one of the nicest people around!

Thanks for the info. The stuff I saw that was good was sort of 70s period Zappa -- in both content and style. What's the album w/ the couch on the cover? That era. Good stuff.

That's such a great album. What else did they play from it?

Russ is correct about Dweezil's reverence to his father's music - it is  a beautiful sentiment from son to father to be doing what Dweezil is doing - carrying the torch, honoring thy father.

I have not seen ZPZ live but did rent their DVD and was floored by the musicianship by everyone!

I saw Jeff Beck the other day and his new band is really amazing. I was worried about a drop off from Tal and Vinnie on bass and drums, but the new band is excellent. They are powerful and more in your face I think, which I actually preferred (and did not think I would). Tal and Vinnie have a more laid back, jazzy take on Jeff's material but the new band is very explosive. I think Rhonda Smith is one of the best live bass players I have ever seen. She was just amazing. Narada is a powerhouse on drums. Saw him break his sticks a few times. He is extremely skilled and talented for sure. I think the two of them used to play with Prince.
