Happy 65th birthday to Jack Bruce. Jack is the bass player that the legendary bass players cite as an influence.

A new liver (?) and assorted health problems have put the miles on. From what I understand, Jack's lucky to still be walking around. But, compared to some of his well-known contemporaries, that's an amazing accomplishment ;-)

Jack is a classically trained cellist. A real musician's musician who happens to be a great singer as well. I've looked up to him all my life. Hopefully, we'll have him with us for many years to come.

I've recently added the slightest touch of my Rat pedal to my bass sound for a Jack Bruce feel when the band gets heated up. Now tell me Jack's distortion is from overdriven old English Marshall stacks.

Of the three I mentioned, Jack has been the greatest legitimate musical influence for me. His background is known to relatively few, (IMHO) having been eclipsed by the Cream phenomenon. My teacher tells an interesting story about Jack's influence: Steve Swallow attended a Cream gig backstage and decided to switch exclusively to bass guitar. I tend toward skepticism about dramatic conversions like that, but my teacher maintains Swallow told him that personally when he studied with Swallow.

Trying to learn the note-for-note bass line to the live version of Crossroads was a great learning experience several years ago. JB was abusing that poor Gibson throughout that tune, and was threatening to eclipse Clapton's playing.

Jack bruce - a legendary bassist and a Glaswegian to boot!

He changed the way bass would be played and must be considered one of the true innovators of advanced bass playing.

I was never much of a fan of Stings bass playing but loved his voice and material. Same goes for mccartney. I have always been impressed by another Jack bruce fan - Geddy Lee! Not only does he play killer bass but also lead vocals, keyboards and foot pedals!

Jack referred to Bach as the first Jazz musician, listing him as one of his very first influences.

Jack was just interviewed on BBC radio 2's 'Steve Wright' show. click on fiday the interview was on round about 4:20pm uk time so around 40 minutes from the end of the show.
He's quite an amusing racontuer and fitted in well on steve's irreverent show.
