Interesting ways of identifying your instrument.
« on: November 04, 2008, 09:50:24 AM »
I've just found this product on the net called Musi-traC and sounds like quite interesting way of identifying your instrument if it is found after theft.

Musi-traC is a tiny microchip to identify and protect your musical instrument.

Inexpensive way to protect your instruments and other property
Operates throughout the UK by MIA approved Musi-traC centre
Dramatically reduces the risk of theft
Aids recovery of stolen property
Microchip Lifetime Guarantee
FREE entry on The National Register of Musical Instruments

Has anyone heard of these before?
I guess if you were having a new instrument built you could send one to alembic and ask them to secure it inside the instrument during construction.

Smart Water!!
My insurance company sent me a free bottle of smart water with my last policy. You brush a bit on and it uniquely marks the instrument( invisibly) and the solution shows up when the police shine in ultra-violet light on it.

However i guess they are both only any good if the instrument is recovered, and to prove identity not prevention of theft.

SmartWater is a colourless liquid solution that is simply dabbed onto the uneven surfaces of your valuables.

I would assume from this description that you need to put the material on a rough surface.  I would assume that the body cavity would be your best bet.  Otherwise I would be concerned about polishing off the fluorescent dye they must use.

Alembic put a Snagg microchip in my Buckeye Essence.  Just ask Mica about it and send her the kit.  [I'm assuming Musi-traC has a kit.] Snagg sold in Canada and the US and registration is free as well.

The microchip is cheap around $30US  They sell the scanner's, too - for $250US if memory serves but you don't really need one.

I also had one installed in the end block of my Upton upright.

Seems like a good idea to me.
