"Bass Bombs"

I did a search for that and found not much. Phil Lesh fans will know what I'm talking about. Did you experience many? What was your favorite? What was it like for you? I always found them unforgettable... Did he control those all by his lonesome? You'd think he'd almost have to coordinate them with the FOH.  
 
I recall one in about '81 at the old Metropolitan Arena in MSP. He dropped it and the entire room expanded. You could feel it in the deepest core of you body and then some. It was followed by screams - some of panic - and a universal oooh... I cannot imagine what the acoustic science of that was on average. How much air moved, how much power sucked down. But I'll never forget the energy. The only time I ever felt as much power that up close and personal was in a cave in Norway where a waterfall passed some horrendous amount of water from glacial melt through a tunnel that you could stand next to...

4 x 21 Bag End sub-woofer at the Chicago Alembic gathering. From my nose to my toes a bone deep rumble - it was a pure, blossoming tone that was coming from a low D that would swell from 'bumping' the upper horn of my frankenstein fretless.
 
All I could do was smile and keep bumping!
 
Not sure if that was what you meant by a Bass Bomb -  all I know is that just thinking about it still makes me grin.

I've also often wondered how exactly these were done....
 
I usually drop bombs by playing harder and increasing volume...

Uptown Theater, Chicago, December 1979 (sorry, can't seem to recall which night).  The boys are cruising along on The Other One; at the place where, had they been singing, it would have been that's when it all began Phil put about a eighth-beat a rest on -gan, then he hit this chord - no, that's not right, he hit This Chord - and I swear to you, every freaking molecule in the universe resonated! I've never been quite the same since.
