Tried one over at Willie's American Guitars in St. Paul on Saturday with a Bergantino AE212 cabinet. It's the MB500 with the 3x12AX7 preamp from the big Fusion head. 4.5 lbs!
Gobs of incredibly clean power, enough to rattle everything in the bass side of the store w/o even cranking up the volume & Master all that much. I am going for a clean, wide-band high fidelity sort of amplifier into which I can dial a little tube character and this seemed to be close to ideal in terms of sound, build quality and price.
The Bergi cabinet was also off the charts. I've never heard anything less than refrigerator-sized that could move mass quantities of air like that little beast. Rock solid down to low E, fully developed mids, and sweet, extended singing highs.
These two seemed to go together like Bogart and Bacall, but I am wondering if any Alembicians out there have any deeper experience with one or both.
Disclaimer: I didn't hear it with my Alembic. I found myself in St. Paul for other reasons and decided to pop in to see what was shaking at Willie's. Used a new Geddy Lee Jazz bass to shake down amp and cabinet as I have a J that I know like the back of my hand and figured that this was close. Will definitely be going back with my Alembic before I buy.
