Since discovering the wonderful tone of the Distillate and the Series in the mid 1990's, I no longer feel the need to have any of the following to get a great sound with a jazz band:
various brands of chorus, Ashley equalizer, Ernie Ball volume pedal, dbx Compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer, Sadowsky outboard pre-amp, and a few stomp boxes I gave away years ago.

If I play my old Carvin, Kawai, Aria, or any other bass, I need to tweak and tweak and I can never quite achive the balance of deep bass to sparkling highs.

(I do plan to buy a MoogerFooger ClusterFlux). Any one else rely less on effects now that they are playing the best?

I don't use effects anymore either. The Alembic is in a league of its own, tone-wise, and doesn't need them.

Ditto to what John said. And to what John posted in the Gig section about trying to achieve a P-bass sound. I find that I have enough flexability to get any sound I need out of my Distillate.

Although, on occasion, I play with a group of guys that are kinda 'out there' and will use my zoom pedal along with a delay pedal - but that's when I am trying to sound like I am playing something other than a bass . . . or just adding alot of color for that special groovy kind of feeling. ;-)

I have a boss multi unit but I don't like to use it. I prefer the bass into the amp (Epifani, Thunderfunk, Phil Jones) via wireless and be done. I'm told that the 1o string just crushes all by itself. Back in the day I used 2 delta lab units for chorus and reverb. Good for my band then but not now.

Same here. In my main bass rack I only have my preamp, a DBX compressor set for very, VERY slight compression, and a Digitech digital delay I have set up for chorus, and which I almost exclusively use with my fretless. I have a Korg multi floor unit that has seen little to no action in a handful of years already, I guess I'm not that kind of guy any longer...

My Dis (recent) does all I need. Although for years I've had a Sansamp Bass Driver DI which, bacause of it's massive tone variations, can turn garbage into gold, if need be.

I carry a chorus and octaver, both Boss. That takes care of everything.

I use a chorus for Sweet Child of Mine only for the opening bass line as that is what is required for the part. Plus chorus gives me a little lee-way for my cows tits fingers not quite hitting the notes above the 12th position on the finger board.
I have been messing around with a digitech delay and looper only at home getting some crazy sounds out of that.

Get a Gallien and you don't need effects. These basses speak for themselves!

Ditto on that one, tncaveman! I absolutely LOVE my little MB200 combo, = and I have always regretted none of its head counterparts (at least = those I've played with so far) are as versatile and feature laden as = this little beast is!. I use it (along with an extension cab) for very = small to small venues, go DI from it and voila!. =20

Zoom unit for chorus/flange/phaser/synth(band I am in does a massive variety of songs from the 60's to 2K).
But usually straight bass and Q switches to add some oomph!

I own an old MXR Stereo Chorus that I occasionally use with my fretless. It is to get that 70's vibe on a few songs. Other than that I don't use any effects.
