Shuffled through my 20+ years of BP mags to revisit whatever issue leapt out at me...grabbed Dec. '08, Anthony Jackson on the cover.

Jackson was asked of bassits he has come to admire. And, I quote....

Another name that bears mention is Jimmy Johnson, who very early on took his chances and made an impact down low playing a 5 string---in additon to being one of the finest bass guitarists ever to play the instrument.

Class, are there any questions? I didn't think so. : ))

Both Anthonay Jackson and Jimmy Johnson are top bassist that deserve broader reecognition.

Very kind of you chaps.

Anthony is a gentleman and one of my bass heroes, such an incredible and unique player. I remember being stunned by that comment in his interview! Such a nice guy to say that.

We both went low around the same time in the mid to late 70's but I give him the nod for being first with his 6-string contra-bass guitar. And man, can he operate that thing! Great stuff.

. . . and even though AJ and the JJ have chops way past me, I have always admired that they play to the song. Wouldn't trade 'em for a hundred of these slap-happy machine gun cats that can't go one verse or even a turnaround without honkin' their horn and derailing a tune.
I've always said, what separates the men from the boys is knowing what to LEAVE OUT.

I'm amused when in a music store, or when someone asks, Hey, man, can I see your bass?
and the VERY FIRST thing they do is start to slap.

Oh, I know, it has it's place, but.....really?
