I'm a child of the Cold War, and remember vividly every Monday at noon, they'd sound the CD (that's Civil Defense for the children in the audience) Siren as a test ('This is Only a Test').
 
I'm REAL glad it wasn't one of these, or it may have blown our home away:

I'd be RRREEEAAALLLLL interested in what the on-axis at one meter reading was !  For the life of me, I can not imagine 137db at 100 feet, no wonder you can hear it in a 16 mile area.
 
And everything goes in cycles.  Evidently, Metro Nashville must have qualified for some Homeland Security monies, and they put up something almost as loud a block away from my house.  They test it on noon Saturdays, then they also blow it when there are tornado warnings, and it STILL scares the hell out of me.  I just wish I could rotate my house so one by one, I could blow the old paint off the other three sides.

That is so cool! I remember seeing a few sirens in my childhood...I was thinking that it would be awesome if someone could create an instant transmission or converter to allow an amp that would be measured in horsepower...badass...Tony

Monday, CD test - rising & falling tone.  
Tuesday, Volunteer Fire Dept. test - constant tone.  
Every day, bombers from Wright-Patterson on training flights so low we could about count the rivets (apparently the SE OH terrain resembled Vietnam's).
Any wonder I still have semi-regular nightmares with mushroom clouds on the horizon?

In my childhood hometown, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin - every day at noon (continuous tone for one minute) and also during tornado warnings (continuous tone until the warning ended).
 
That thing could put the fear of God in ya for sure.

I'm about a 600 ft from one of the evacuation sirens for Sharon Harris nuclear power plant. They recently replaced the WWII era mechanical rotating sirens with newer all electronic fixed position sirens. Once a month we get a 15 sec partial power test and quarterly a full power 2 minute test. Fortunately we get a warning as I can hear the other sirens going off before they get to ours. Gives me plenty of time to prepare. For those that wonder what else musicians ear plugs can be used for you've found it.
