Does anyone use a standard set of 9's instead of 10's on their Tribute (or perhaps other Alembic guitar) and find that they don't sacrifice much or anything tonewise?

I use 9's on all my guitars, including my Alembic Orion. Never had any problems with tone. I do also use a heavy dunlop Stubby 3.0 mm pick so that helps keep the tone strong.

Based on your id, do you play jazz with 9's?

My experience with 9's on other guitars is that when I switch to them they always sound fine, but then when I switch back to 10's I realize how much the 9's were missing, particularly with clean sounds. Being a bass player, I don't use a pick, only fingers. I pulled my Tribute out of the closet for the first time in a year and it has 9's on it, which always feel good. It sounds great, but when I a/b with my Strat to get a clean jazz sound, the Strat is much better, with a fuller deeper bottom. Not like a true jazz box, but much jazzier than the Tribute with 9's.

My experience with 9s is similar to Jimmy's. My PRS CE24 came with 9 1/2's! I liked them a lot more than the 9's, but I had to buy strings from PRS direct as no one around here carries 9 1/2s. I eventually just went to 10's on it.
