My mother-in-law is an artist who makes chairs of laminated hard woods. They don't have any arms , so they work nicely for playing. We'll be receiving a dining room set similar to this one some day:

These are only 15K! Same chair style the Baron sat in in Dune. A little ornate and biomechanoid, perhaps. Maybe would go better with a Ritter than an Alembic.

Regarding the original chair, I think I'd rather have the more standard leather-encased version that sells for more like $1000-1500. That style of chair is very comfortable, but I think the wood armrests would have to be custom fitted to you to work. They look like they might be hard to adjust.

Kevin, that's one heavy and large looking chair. One must have quite the sizable dining area to have a set of those, and probably on the first floor! I love the concept, but I'm not sure that it would work for me as executed. Probably have no problem supporting any size human, though.

Bob, while they're certainly not light, she does chamber the bodies so that the large parts are hollow, so they are not as bad as you might think. I can easily pick one up by myself to move it, but I wouldn't carry it any distance. Needless to say, they never fail to receive a reaction.

I can get the same chair made in Mexico for $29.99. Looks the same, sits the same, and it's just as good as the American version. But you chair snobs just don't want that Made in Mexico sticker on the armrest.

Mike, while some foreign made product is of equal or even better quality than some things made in the USA, it is definitely not always the case. Often a product will look exactly the same, but the materials used won't stand up. I have seen many chairs of similar design for a variety of prices and they just aren't made the same. The thickness and durability of the leather varies, the strength of the base varies greatly. You can tell when you see one on the showroom that hangs crooked because the supports just weren't made to take any abuse.

If you have a brand name or idea where one can get one of those Norwegian-style recliners for $30, I'd love to hear about it. Lesser quality ones that I have seen seem to run $500-700 and the ones that are built right are over $1000. If you're talking about all the Aeron knock-offs out there, I haven't seen one that sits quite like the original, especially when you throw on the lumbar support. There are people out there who could sit on a bumpy rock and be comfortable, but I'm not one of them. I sat on every office chair sold by every office store and furniture chain before I bought the one I am using. I did like the Aeron better, but I have a solid chair that was about 1/4th the price and is 95% as comfortable.

That was a joke Bob. The chair was a metaphor for the debate often held regarding American vs Mexican made Fender Basses and such. But if I had to explain it... I guess it missed the mark!!!

Sorry, Mike... I know there are cheap knock offs, maybe like $100 and not one of them is made of anything better than tin foil and saran wrap. I guess I should have expected that your hyper-exaggeration was intended as humor, but somehow I missed it.

I currently have a very pretty, extremely uncomfortable chair in my home office, and I'm looking to get a more comfortable chair, and if it ain't pretty, so be it.

Bradley, it's just one of the $150-200 leather office chairs from Staples. I forget what brand it even is, maybe Lane? I believe that chairs are a personal fit, especially for those of us who carry extra pounds. What works for me won't necessarily work for you. In particular, I need something with good lumbar support. The biggest drawback is that it's a leather chair. That makes it less comfortable for extended use on a warm day than a mesh chair like the Aeron, but that's what you get for saving several hundred dollars.

If money were no object, I'd get a size B Aeron with the posture fit support, but then I'd also own about seven Alembics instead of two. Although they run $800+ new, I think you can find used Aerons through eBay, or better Craigslist, for about $500. The lumbar support add on is nice, but the less common posture fit is way better, at least for me.
