This is just an update on this early pre amp. Last night I had a bit of time to finally mess around with it. I swapped out the old RCA tubes and put in a set of Sovtec tubes. No change. The bass control still acted like a mid, and the mid boosted the bottom, but only a little. I opened it back up and took a closer look. The wire that connects the bass pot to the circut board on BOTH bass pots was disconnected. Of course I broke out the soldering iron and re connected these 2 leads. After that, the pre amp worked perfectly. The controls now did what they were supposed to do. I can't imagine why these were disconnected. I also wonder if they were ever even connected. I did not see where any of the insulation was stripped back off of the wire. Strange. Well, they are soldered back in place, and when hooked up to a small BGW 45 watt power amp, this pre amp sounds FAT.
Mica - thanks for the info you gave on this unit. I was starting to think that it was a complete mystery. I have not seen another like it. Being that this one is so old, could you possibly guess a year that it was made? Is this one of the ones from the late 60's?
